In the UK 80 companies offer equalised parental leave and 50 offer 26 weeks fully paid leave. How does you business rate?

I help HR teams support new dads with 1 to 1 and group coaching, webinars and workshops | Founder of Inspiring Dads, Speaker, ex Management Consultant, Podcast Host, 2x Stay at Home Dad and National League Hockey Umpire

"As of 1 April, Marks and Spencer will introduce six weeks of paternity leave at full pay and double its maternity and adoption leave to 26 weeks at full pay, equating to a £5 million investment." 👌 Of course I'm greedy, I want 26 weeks full pay parental leave - treating all parents the same, regardless of how they become parents. But, that said, kudos to M&S for making changes in the right direction - every little helps as they say in some retail circles. Well paid, extended parental leave, really really matters for gender equality -as is so perfectly illustrated but this comment I saw and grabbed this morning (but can't now find the post) "... women work part time because taking long periods of parental leave and acting as the primary caregiver, means that their partners go on to win leadership roles and increased salaries." Equalised parental leave, which according to Elliott Rae's research is offered in the UK by approx 80 companies, is a vital foundation for parenting choice, creating equality at home and reframing our gendered associations about care giving. Equality at work is driven by equality at home. #inspiringdads #equalitystartsathome #parentingoutloud https://lnkd.in/ezeywmJq

This Valentine's Day, I'd LOVE to hear from businesses who understand that the parental transition isn't just for mums, and that regardless of how individuals become parents or how much leave they take, they too need support. In fact, I'd go as far as to plead for businesses to decouple their coaching support from the length of leave taken. Why would a man taking 2 weeks leave be in less need of support than a man who takes 3 months leave? The emotional and practical impacts of becoming a father are intense and at times, wholly unexpected, even if it isn't their first time. DM me to talk workshops, webinars and coaching support for all stages of the “dad journey,” and help reduce relationship tension and improve mental health outcomes and improve gender equality at home and in work. #inspiringdads #equalitystartsathome #howareyoudad

There's a common, but damaging misconception that men don't want flexible working, but it's not actually true. Exhibit 1 Pre pandemic, Zurich and the Behavioural Insights Team found that men and women were both interested in job roles that were explicitly flexible. "Across the board, the adverts attracted more than double the number of applications across males and females for every role. This could indicate that flexible working options are just as important to men as they are to women in today’s society." https://lnkd.in/eepTBrX2 Exhibit 2 Research from the Behavioural Insights Team, again doing great work, with Santander UK found that men thought that roughly 65% of their peers would encourage male colleagues to work flexibly, while in reality 99% would do so. Sharing this positive news changed attitudes, defeating the myth.... "Simply telling men that their peers support parental leave and flexible working, increases their intention to share care." https://lnkd.in/dQGBBhT -------- Extended parental leave, flexible and remote working is good for mental health, equality at home and equality at work and all those benefits could be just a small nudge away. Supporting New Dads is good for everyone - families, children and the workplace. Barry et al, Lancet 2023, discovered that paternity leave improves post-natal depression outcomes compared with fathers who did not take paternity leave. A paper published in 2019 by reasearchers at Ohio State and Columbia Universities showed that even nine years later, children whose fathers took at least two weeks of paternity leave after they were born reported feeling closer to their fathers than children with fathers who did not take leave. A McKinsey research paper pointed to evidence that mothers’ income rose by 7%, per month of paternity leave. While research by Dr Ana Jordan, University of Lincoln ‘Mothers in traditional arrangements reported significantly lower wellbeing and relationship quality than mothers who shared childcare equally or reversed roles’ For more evidence, join me tomorrow at 12 Midday for my free webinar "Why Supporting New Dads At Work Is THE Route To Gender Equality" https://lnkd.in/eSFAFTKr #genderequality #inspiringdads #dadsmatter

“I hate weekends” said a client of mine. He went on to explain how the parenting dynamic between him and his wife felt all wrong, he was always on the back foot, “I feel like one of the children.” It’s story I often hear from my private male clients, high achievers with young children, career focused, their wives to took a couple of sets of extended parental leave and now those dads are a little lost in domestic structures they didn't have a hand in creating and definitions of 'how we parent', that I they feel they need to go along with. Now out of the baby survival zone, they are facing the discomfort of an unequal parenting relationship and the desire for a legacy solves the challenge of “How to be a great dad, without sacrificing a great career.” It’s important work and I love it, it completely energises me. My client talk, they reflect and they share concerns that they can’t express anywhere else. To be honest, I wish I had worked with them earlier in their fatherhood journey, at the stage when I could help them define their purpose, learn about how to create equality at home and avoid some of the stress and anxiety that they feel now. Catching men at the start of their fatherhood journey or revisiting them with each new baby has important long lasting benefits for well-being, performance and equality. "Paternity leave: The hidden barriers keeping men at work" “Most cite fears of being discriminated against professionally, missing out on pay rises and promotions, being marginalised or even mocked as reasons for not taking time off.” So said a feature piece in the BBC called "Paternity leave: The hidden barriers keeping men at work" https://lnkd.in/dCp9WZU It makes sobering reading for those of us who know how much dads want to be involved and the considerable benefits to their well-being, their children's development and their partner mental health when men do take paternal leave. "A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.” Last year, I did a live event and the promotion text on the sign up page really caught my eye... “Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.” Because those gender biases cut both ways, one key way to break the bias is to change how we see gender roles for everyone. The traditional, binary narrative of women = carers, and men = breadwinners is instinctively out of date in 2024 and simply doesn’t reflect the reality of many relationships, regardless of makeup. Did you know that in the UK, 75% of women with dependent children are in work (ONS Dec 2019)? For business leaders, for whom dual income relationships were an anomaly as their careers developed, it can be a lot to take in, but if society and the workplace is going to make tangible progress towards gender equality, both at home and at work, and closing pay gaps, then the cultural stereotypes that damage everyone have to be broken. It can feel counter intuitive, but in my free webinar, I’ll explain why supporting new dads at the crucial parental transition has the power to transform how those men see their roles at home and at work and undermine the assumptions we hold about gender. It’s also vital for their mental fitness! Did you know that in the first year after birth, new dads are twice as likely to be depressed as the general population? Just think how powerful it would be for gender equality if your business could not tell which prospective parent was likely to take extended leave or seek to work flexibly, remotely or part time. A new generation of dads is ready – we see it in the post Covid response to flexible working – I’ll show you evidence that it was there pre Covid too. We all help break the bias when we work to eliminate stereotypes and discrimination that hamper new dads’ opportunity to “have it all” and to be the active and involved father they don’t remember growing up.
