#Floodmodels aren’t just numbers and maps—they're pivotal in shaping #underwriting decisions. In a recent podcast, Tom Philp shared some eye-opening perspectives on evaluating and implementing flood models, and it’s a must-hear for anyone in the insurance and risk modelling space. Here are the key takeaways: ✔️ Tailored evaluations matter: Are you looking at the model for #aggregation or #underwriting? Your approach changes everything. ✔️ Footprint integrity: From #fluvial to #pluvial to #coastal risk—understanding if these footprints align with reality is critical. ✔️ Transparency is key: Flood modelling is complex and vendors who can clearly communicate uncertainties and methodologies are game-changers. The bottom line? It’s not just about what the model says—it’s about how it says it and who it’s speaking to. As Tom highlighted, collaboration and clarity can turn complexity into #actionable insights. Have you grappled with flood model evaluations? Let’s discuss—drop your thoughts below! 👇 #FloodModelling #InsuranceInnovation #RiskManagement Sam Jones Susi Ozkurt Matthew Grant Robin Merttens Alex Smithard Charlotte Salisbury Holly Elizabeth Caroline Fox Stefan Wunderlich Oliver Wing Fathom

When it comes to flood models, there's more than meets the eye—and it’s not just about the maps and event sets! 🌐 Caroline Fox at Guy Carpenter shared some fascinating insights on our podcast about why vendor #models can diverge so significantly. Spoiler: It’s often in the #methodologies. For example, how do you determine flood depth at a specific location? 📍 - Is it as simple as picking the value from the flood footprint at that coordinate? - Or should we consider a broader area, reflecting the building footprint or hazard spread better? And then, even within that area: 🔢 Do you summarise hazard using the mean or the median? It seems minor, but it’s not. In an area where most of the region isn’t flooded, the median might show zero hazard, while the mean tells a very different story. These “small” decisions can lead to big differences in results. 🚨 So, next time you’re evaluating flood models, remember: it’s not just the big pieces that matter—it’s the fine print in the methodologies. 🧐 What are your thoughts on these nuances? Let's discuss! 👇 #FloodModelling #DataScience #RiskAssessment Sam Jones Susi Ozkurt Charlotte Salisbury Matthew Grant Robin Merttens Benjamin Gopal Alex Smithard Holly Elizabeth Tom Philp Stefan Wunderlich Oliver Wing

In a recent podcast, Oliver Wing at Fathom delivered an eye-opening take on #uncertainty in modelling—particularly in high-resolution perils like #flood #modelling. 💡 Here are some key takeaways: 🌊 Flood modelling challenges - urban contexts present a unique set of uncertainties all of which can throw a wrench in precision. It’s neither mathematically nor computationally feasible to capture every variable. 📉 Model spread ≠ True uncertainty - Models aren’t perfect machines spitting out absolute truths. They’re #calibrated. 🔍 The bigger picture - “Don’t conflate model spread with true uncertainty.” The outputs aren’t just an assembly of validated components. They require careful, human-driven interpretation. 👉 The takeaway... Models are powerful tools, but they’re not the final word. As Oliver puts it, there’s a layer of #subjectivity that calls for caution and context when leveraging their results. What do you think? Are we doing enough to understand and communicate the uncertainty in our models? Let’s discuss! ⬇️ #Modelling #Uncertainty #FloodModelling #DataScience #UrbanPlanning #RiskManagement #Podcasts Sam Jones Matthew Grant Holly Elizabeth Susi Ozkurt Robin Merttens Charlotte Salisbury Alex Smithard Benjamin Gopal Caroline Fox Stefan Wunderlich Tom Philp

💪Is #Parametric an underappreciated option in insurance? What do you think - ✏️ comment below ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Robin recently caught up with Munich Re’s Marcel-Steffen Reif and René Mück to ask whether parametric is starting to get the attention it deserves? You all know that at InsTech we are great fans of this insurance option, but what does the #market think? 🧠 René Mück talks about the power of #education. As more and more parametric teams spring up and become standard units in insurance companies, Rene emphasises their common challenge - having to educate the client and making clear what they are buying. Overcoming concerns, near-misses and entrenching the parameters of the policy will ensure parametric continues to grow and do so successfully. As always, the InsTech podcast comes out every Sunday morning. Look out for another exciting episode coming out soon.
