About us
The Institute of Art and Law is an educational organisation giving knowledge and perspective on the law relating to cultural heritage a concept which includes art, antiquities, archives, archaeology, architecture, monuments, treasure and much, much more. IAL’s educational remit is fulfilled through publishing and courses. It convenes distance learning and intensive courses (both public and in-house) on art and museums law, as well as seminars, study groups and conferences in the United Kingdom and abroad. It also publishes monographs and commentaries on all aspects of the law relating to cultural heritage, in addition to a quarterly periodical, Art Antiquity and Law, now in its twentieth year. The law of cultural heritage is a wide remit: it encompasses a vast range of subject matter, from copyright and art theft, to protection of buried treasure and shipwrecks, return of human remains from museum collections, restitution of illegally exported antiquities and art wrongfully taken in time of war including Holocaust-looted, archives and religious objects, through to planning regulations protecting listed buildings and scheduled monuments, and the organisation of international blockbuster exhibitions. Internationally recognised, IAL delivers, through its educational and publishing programmes, a depth of knowledge unrivalled elsewhere.

This is why we do it. So happy to have supported Karla on the way to her LLM in Art, Business and Law from Queen Mary University of London. Karla is a brilliant lawyer and legal scholar from Peru, who has worked at the Ministry of Culture and generally in cultural/arts affairs. I supervised her excellent dissertation on law and ethics in provenance - a subject close to my own heart. Well done Karla and all the best for the exciting chapter ahead.
👩🏻🎓 My year began with the receipt of the physical diploma that marks the culmination of my Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Art, Business, and Law, a programme jointly offered by Queen Mary University of London and the Institute of Art and Law . ✨ To me, this achievement goes beyond an academic milestone; it reflects countless hours of effort and a cherished opportunity for which I am deeply grateful. I hope similar opportunities become accessible to everyone with the passion and capability to pursue their dreams. 🌸 This accomplishment is also profoundly personal, rooted in the constant support of my parents, my husband, my mentor María del Carmen Arana Courrejolles and my friends, who have been instrumental throughout my journey. Their encouragement has empowered me to learn without limitations, and I am sincerely thankful for that. 🍀 I extend my gratitude to Alexander Herman, my dissertation supervisor, for his patient guidance and insightful mentorship throughout my research, titled "Ethics and Law in Harmony: A Study of Due Diligence and Provenance Research in UK Museum Acquisition," a topic I am truly passionate about. I would also like to thank Professor Debbie De Girolamo and Emily Gould for their unwavering support and for instilling in us, during each class, a passion for exploring the intersection of law and art. Lastly, I am grateful to my classmates for making my LL.M. journey truly remarkable ✨.

I am thrilled to be writing and researching again on the fascinating topic of Italian cultural heritage. This has led to my latest publication, which focuses on the one-of-a-kind law enforcement unit dedicated to safeguarding cultural heritage and recovering stolen and counterfeit artworks. Have a read of my article for the Institute of Art and Law blog, where I explore the incredible work of the Comando Carabinieri per la Tutela del Patrimonio Culturale. Please do get in touch if you want to discuss this further. I would love to hear your thoughts.
