International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits

Non-profit Organizations

A global initiative for biodiversity credits, for the benefit of people and planet.

About us

There is an opportunity in Biodiversity Credits to unlock significant financial flows – we must involve all stakeholders (including finance and industry, indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) and NGOs) and work together with governments to ensure that nature markets deliver for nature, climate and people. The International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits will do just that, operating as an independent and global initiative, bringing together key voices from all sectors, governments and IPLCs, and building upon existing initiatives to help significantly increase investment through high integrity nature markets.

  • This week we were delighted to host two events to promote the findings of IAPB’s #Framework as part of our 'Roadshow'.   We were joined by demand-side actors, including corporates and members of the investment community, for a session led by IAPB Panel members Rhian-Mari Thomas OBE, Chief Executive of the Green Finance Institute, and David Vaillant, Global Head of Finance, Strategy & Participations for BNP Paribas Asset Management. There was discussion of the most pertinent insights from IAPB’s Framework for potential #buyers of credits and next steps for #scaling #demand.   We also held a further session for supply-side actors, such as private corporations and conservation NGOs. This was led by IAPB Panel members Pauline Nantongo, Executive Director of ECOTRUST Ug, Simon Morgan, International Projects Lead at CreditNature, and Mariana Sarmiento, founder and CEO of Terrasos. Discussion centred around what key opportunities and challenges exist in the #supply of high integrity #biodiversity #credits and how to support development of impactful and inclusive credit projects at scale and pace.   It was great to welcome so many interested individuals and organisations and hear their perspectives on the Framework’s range of applications and how it can support suppliers and buyers to embed high integrity in project design, delivery and governance. Many thanks to all who attended for helping to make the sessions such a success!

  • IAPB was at the the 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀' 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 earlier this week! The event highlighted #France's new regime for biodiversity offsetting through the "Sites naturels de compensation, restauration et renaturation" (#SNCRR) – high-integrity environmental compensation sites. French Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher emphasized the urgent need for private financing to tackle accelerated biodiversity loss. She highlighted that the IAPB #framework should serve as “a compass” for #biodiversity #credit regimes, ensuring environmental integrity, security, traceability, and transparency. Our co-chair Sylvie Goulard presented IAPB’s work, including the publication of its Framework at COP 16 in Cali, Colombia. She announced the launch of a Community of Practice featuring different biodiversity credit pilot projects, offering a platform for project developers to exchange ideas and test the Framework on the ground.

  • #Technology and innovative approaches to #measurement have a key role to play in unlocking #biodiversity #credits’ potential to deliver positive outcomes for #Nature and just, equitable benefits for biodiversity #stewards. This includes technical innovation, such as making use of the latest #digital #monitoring technologies, and financial innovation, including the adoption of innovative financial vehicles. Here are some examples of biodiversity credit projects that use innovative technologies to make markets more efficient, strengthen trust and transparency between actors, and support actualisation of global conservation goals: 🌲Reforest'Action, a company focused on restoration and regeneration of forest ecosystems, is partnering with the @Guangxi Chongzuo Linda Forestry Company to restore public plots in the #Ghizhou area in western #China, which has suffered from soil deterioration and increased erosion due to intensive agricultural practices. The project aims to restore the land’s ecological properties and biodiversity through planting 1.5 million trees. Reforest’Action takes an innovative and holistic approach to project planning and measurement of impact through a combination of field monitoring, remote sensing and reporting from project implementers on predefined metrics. 🦏Wadappt is a service provider that combines a business-to-client approach through a marketplace connecting buyers interested in purchasing biodiversity units with on-the-ground projects co-designed with communities. #Blockchain technology is used to secure proof of measurement collected through participatory science protocols on predefined metrics. All collected data is openly accessible on Waddapt’s website. One proposed project focuses on the protection of the black rhino in #Namibia where guards are equipped with a phone application that lets them record evidence and upload it on Waddapt. And with that, we've wrapped up our showcase of incredible #pilot #projects which are featured in our #Framework. If you'd like to find out more about it, follow this link: https://lnkd.in/dQA4uSEv

  • We've been exploring the central role that Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs) have in high integrity biodiversity credit projects. IAPB’s #Framework calls for local #Nature #stewards to be co-creators and co-owners of projects and markets and included in all aspects of design and delivery. Here are some further projects that seek to promote IPs and LCs’ agency, empowerment and agendas: 🌱 Colombia-based developer Terrasos is supporting the development of the Alto Río San Juan Habitat Bank – Yerrecuy project, the first Habitat Bank registered and operated by an Afro-Colombian community in #Colombia. It is located in the Chocó biogeographical region, a biodiversity hotspot that is threatened by habitat loss and climate change. Through #biodiversity #credits, this stewardship project aims at securing long-term protection for natural resources in the territory belonging to the Alto San Juan ASOCASAN Community Council. 🐆 RESTORE - biodiversity, together is working to conserve and restore biodiversity in the Parque Nacional Sierra del Divisor, #Peru, which contains more than 3,000 notable species, some of which are threatened with extinction, such as the white-bellied atel, the bald ouakari and the jaguar. The park is home to various Indigenous communities belonging to the Ashaninka, Shipibo Conibo, Matsés Huambisa and Isconahuaaux ethnic groups. These communities have invaluable knowledge of Nature management and play an active role in preserving biodiversity. Restore works to step up measures to protect the park, both to preserve its natural wealth and support the local populations who depend on it. 🏞️ Conservation International and #Tidal #Moon, an Indigenous-led sustainable enterprise, are working together to develop a biodiversity crediting project as part of seagrass restoration efforts in Shark Bay, near the westernmost point of #Australia. Shark Bay is home to one of the largest, most diverse seagrass meadows in the world, supporting high levels of marine biodiversity and underpinning the area’s cultural values. The project aims to support the economic development of Mulgana (the traditional custodians of the region) and has trained and employed many divers from the local community to undertake restoration activities. We're very close to wrapping up our posts on biodiversity credit pilot projects found in our #Framework - stay tuned to read about the last of them next week! #IAPB #Nature #Credits #Framework

  • We're delighted to share a recording (in French) from our co-chair Sylvie Goulard who explains the potential role that #biodiversity #credits have in channelling financial flows to support the transition to a #Nature-#positive future. Those include: 📏 To improve the quantification and the value of nature conservation or restoration projects. 🌱 They can be used by companies, for example coffee or cocoa producers, to transform their production model. They can also help finance projects to protect or restore key ecosystems such as forests, mangroves, or coral reefs. 💸 The IAPB has proposed guidance for the governance and operation of biodiversity credits markets, so that this financial instrument can develop with integrity and contribute to strengthening funding, particularly from the private sector, towards nature-based solutions.

  • We’re continuing to highlight the central role of #Indigenous #Peoples and #local #communities (IPs and LCs) in conserving, restoring and protecting Nature in the next posts. Our #Framework calls for IPs and LCs to continue to be involved in the development, oversight and benefit-sharing in all biodiversity credit projects with full respect of their rights. You’ll find some great examples of biodiversity credit projects with an IPs and LCs focus below: 🤝 The Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda ECOTRUST Ug Biocredits programme is a community-designed, owned and led corridor restoration programme, based on a multi-metric model. ECOTRUST has adopted the Gender Action Learning Systems (GALS) as a community engagement strategy throughout all stages of the Biocredits project’s design and implementation. With this approach to community engagement, ECOTRUST supports the effective recognition and protection of Indigenous rights and customary uses aligned to conservation objectives. 💸 Since 2023, EarthAcre has been leading the Ol Kinyei Biodiversity Project in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, one of the oldest territories in #Kenya's Maasai Mara. This project focuses on restoring wildlife corridors and enhancing habitats through stewardship interventions. EarthAcre’s nature stewardship model provides direct payments to individual landowners for their commitment to conservation efforts, making it an economically viable option for local communities. 🌿 Savimbo, an Indigenous Peoples and local communities funded and run B-corporation, is implementing the Villagarzón and the Chandia Na'en projects, two biodiversity conservation projects on the border of the tropical Andean biodiversity hotspot between #Colombia and #Ecuador. Both are crediting projects, awaiting certification, and rely on the Interoperable Biodiversity Unit (IBU) for quantifying biodiversity. The project in Colombia stacks #biodiversity #credits with #carbon #credits from an adjacent project.
