We have just published an updated version of our whitepaper on Blast Furnace & Basic Oxygen Furnace Steelmaking, from our OBMs & Carbon Neutral Steelmaking series. This paper examines a variety of options for improving the carbon footprint of blast furnace / basic oxygen furnace steelmaking in the short to medium term including process (i.e. changes in burden preparation and charging) and end-of-pipe (i.e. carbon capture). It looks at differing region approaches. To download this paper and see the full series: https://lnkd.in/guTRCpRH Thanks to Joseph Poveromo and Rénard Chaigneau for their work on this paper.

The trade association for the global ore-based metallics industry
About us
The International Iron Metallics Association (IIMA) is the trade association for the Ore-Based Metallics (OBM) industry. Ore-based metallics, such as merchant pig iron (MPI), direct reduced iron (DRI), hot briquetted iron (HBI), granulated pig iron (GPI), are value-adding feedstock materials for the iron and steel and ferrous casting industries. IIMA has, as its principal objective, their promotion through product and market support, innovation, education and regulatory support. IIMA is dedicated to those involved in the ore-based metallics value chain - raw material supply, production and transformation, trading and distribution, transportation and logistics, technology and equipment. Its members account for more than 80% of production and international trade in ore-based metallics. IIMA’s Members are: • Producers, Traders and Distributors of merchant pig iron, HBI, DRI and related materials • Iron ore Mining companies • Steel plants, foundries and, in general, consumers of OBMs • Suppliers of technology and equipment to the OBM industry • Shipping and logistics providers • Metallics project developers Our mission is to: • promote the use of ore-based metallics as value-adding raw materials for the iron and steel and ferrous casting industries; • represent the collective interests of Members in international industry, trade, and regulatory forums; • collect and provide statistical and other industry information, commercially sensitive or proprietary information always excluded; • provide a forum for co-operation and exchange of ideas and information on scientific and technical matters related to the ore-based metallics industries.

IIMA is pleased to announce that AMIC has joined the association and a representative was present at our Members' Meeting in Houston. AMIC’s mission is undertaking the development and investment in Titanium metallurgy value chain and Pig Iron in the kingdom which will ensure the transfer of this strategical industry to KSA, develop the local talents and will be the backbone for Aviation Industry in the Kingdom and enabling Vision 2030. AMIC, an affiliate of TASNEE (a major Saudi petrochemical company), is focusing on the titanium value chain in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To date, AMIC has established significant upstream projects for the titanium metal industry and Pig Iron in Saudi Arabia, including: - Constructing an ilmenite processing plant (Advanced Smelting Industries Company; ASIC) in Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries (JCPDI), with an initial capacity of 500,000 MT of titanium slag and 250,000 MT of pig iron. - Building the first titanium sponge plant in the Middle East, located in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia For more information, see their website: www.Tasnee.com

At the recent Members’ Meeting in Houston, Chris Barrington was awarded the IIMA Fellowship upon his retirement as the Chief Advisor. The award was given in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the association and his distinguished career in metallics, spanning more than four decades. His professional journey has been one of unwavering commitment, expertise, and leadership—shaping both the International Iron Metallics Association (IIMA) and the wider ore-based metallics industry. Chris’s involvement with IIMA and its predecessor, the International Pig Iron Association (IPIA), has been an integral part of his career for over 20 years. Prior to joining the IPIA, Chris built a strong foundation in the iron and steel industry, starting in 1974 with British Steel Corporation, where he held various key roles in marketing and sales for over 20 years. During this time, he developed a deep understanding of the industry’s complexities, laying the groundwork for his later success in association leadership. In 2005 Chris was integral to the management of the International Pig Iron Association, bringing his wealth of knowledge and industry experience to the organization. When the IPIA transitioned into the International Iron Metallics Association in 2010, Chris’s role became even more vital as the organization expanded its scope to represent a broader array of metallics. Since 2010, Chris has served as IIMA’s Chief Advisor, offering his expertise and thoughtful guidance to the association. Chris also stepping in as Secretary General during 2017-2019 at a crucial transition period, demonstrating extraordinary leadership and ensuring stability and the continual thriving of the association. His vision and strategic thinking have played a key role in positioning IIMA as a leading voice in the industry. Chris has been a prominent voice in global forums advocating for innovation and sustainability within the iron metallics sector. Mentoring others, he has become a trusted advisor and cherished colleague. His passion for the industry and for helping others grow within it is a hallmark of his career. The award of the IIMA Fellowship to Chris Barrington reflects the deep appreciation felt for his contributions to IIMA and the global iron metallics community and for his decades of service, leadership, and friendship. #obms #metallics #ironandsteel #steelmaking #greensteel #fellowship #leadership
