It’s been a busy end to the year for our policy and research team. We published a new report on children’s experiences of nude deepfakes, briefed MPs and Peers on several debates in Parliament and responded to the Government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review Call for Evidence. The Curriculum Review aims to ensure that all children and young people have access to a broad and balanced curriculum that prepares them for future life and work. In our response, we called for improvements to the way that children are taught the skills necessary to keep themselves and others safe online, known as ‘media literacy’. We shared our learnings about children’s and parents’ experiences online and our recommendations for ensuring every child leaves school with the skills they need to thrive in a digital world. 175 million. That's how many Europeans that come to TikTok every month to be inspired, to learn new things, and to be entertained. Keeping our community safe has always been our top priority and it was an absolute pleasure to host journalists from all over Europe in our Transparency and Accountability Center yesterday for our European Safety Forum to talk about just this. We held a number of focused panel sessions with our in-house and external experts, covering: ▶️ Our continued work around Project Clover and delivering on our €12bn data security investment ▶️ A discussion on the 'Unfiltered' research report findings. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dUCtDyPi ▶️ Our approach to age assurance and a new multi-stakeholder dialogue designed to build knowledge and consensus on this area. ▶️ How we are beginning to roll out our in-app helpline resources in 13 European countries, working with NGOs to connect people to local helplines that provide expert support when they report content in-app for suicide, self-harm, hate and harassment. There's no finish line when it comes to safety and security, and we will continue to learn from our community, partner with experts and strive to do even better. If our users don't feel safe, they won't bring their true selves to TikTok and the platform just wouldn't be the same. Thank you to our in-house experts Chloe Setter, Nikki S., Jade Nester, Brie Pegum, Elaine Fox and Jade Nester, as well as our partners NCC Group, Internet Matters and The Centre for Information Policy Leadership for joining us. We look forward to continued partership on our ongoing plans to strengthen safety and security Read more about our latest updates: https://lnkd.in/d7dNva-8

It is excellent to see a continued focus on the worrying rise of nude deepfakes: AI-generated, sexually explicit images. Nudifying tools work on children and our research finds that not enough is being done to stop children from coming into contact with them. Our report last month found that over half a million children in the UK (13%) already have experience with one. https://bit.ly/4eNVhuG We support Jess Asato MP in calling for nudifying tools to be banned by Government.
Technological developments are out-stripping our capacity to tackle violence against women and girls. As Internet Matters have found, sexually-explicit deepfakes are becoming an increasingly worrying issue - in and out of schools. And so, I am today calling on the Government to ban nudifying tools and apps. Read more: https://t.co/3tg8DHBVgQ

It's #WorldChildrensDay and 2024 marks the 100 year anniversary of the Geneva Declaration on the Rights of the Child - a declaration that protects children's digital rights too. 💻 World Children's Day is about listening to our future - our children. And this future is digital. Children have a right to access information, and to learn, play and socialise online. But children also have the right to be protected from exploitation and violence. Two-thirds of UK children report experiencing online harm and 30% say they don't know any tools to keep them safe online. Here are some ways you can help the children in your life lead healthy digital lives: ✅Learn how to protect your children online ✅Communicate with young people ✅Access resources for your classroom Celebrating children means listening to them, but it also protecting them - because children deserve a safe digital world. https://bit.ly/40U4dvb
