It with a sense of sadness and loss, that the Institute learnt the news of the recent passing of Alexander (Sandy) Mackay, a Fellow and active member of IOM3 Hong Kong Branch, and internationally experienced and accomplished geotechnical and tunnel engineer, in a career spanning 37 years. Sandy joined the IOM3 in 1999, subsequently becoming Chartered and finally a Fellow in 2012.  In the Hong Kong Branch he participated in many events, serving on the committee for several years, and was instrumental in organising a memorable Q-logging half-day seminar in 2013. His enthusiasm and dedication left a lasting impression to all who met him. Born in Telford, Shropshire in 1966, Sandy studied a BEng in Engineering Geology & Geotechnics at the University of Portsmouth from 1985 to 1989. He furthered his education by completing an MSc(Eng) in Foundation Engineering at the University of Birmingham in 1994. Following graduation from Birmingham, Sandy’ adventurous nature soon found him in Hong Kong, a place he would consider his home and base for the remainder of his career. Initially Sandy joined a ground investigation contractor but soon moved on to gain broader experience and over the next 10 years or so, he joined several companies in Hong Kong including IP Foundation, Halcrow, Scott Wilson, Hyder, Maeda, Nishimatsu and SMEC, latterly working on several tunnel projects.   During this time Sandy met his wife, Ada, and they married in 2006. Around this time, his tunnelling and international experience set the tone for his future career travelling widely to engage in projects in 28 countries all over the world including Malaysia, Afghanistan, Russian Federation and all over the Middle East, latterly in Saudi Arabia on the NEOM project and most recently in UAE for the Dubai Strategic Sewerage Tunnels project as Project Director. In all these projects, Sandy applied his extensive international experience and added his unique and valuable engineering and project management insight to complex problems. Sandy greatly contributed to civil, geotechnical and tunnelling practice with dedication and enthusiasm during his career of nearly 4 decades. He was widely published and was the principal or co-author of 70 technical publications. A strong advocate of knowledge-sharing, Sandy made presentations at various Institutions, corporations and International Conferences. Sandy’s passing is a big loss to the geotechnical and tunnelling community, and the many people who got to know him during his widely travelled career. He was one of life’s characters, affable and fun to be around. He will be sorely missed. The technical site visit to the Route 11 – Horizontal Directional Coring (HDC) site was successfully held on the 21 September 2024! 🎉 A total of 20 participants joined the special event. Despite the pouring rain 🌧️ during the event, the group had the privilege of witnessing this state-of-the-art technology - trenchless techniques used for ground investigation works, allowing for more comprehensive ground data collection and enabling engineers to identify problematic ground along the proposed tunnel alignment. 🔍 It was a truly insightful experience. A heartfelt thank you to the Client – Highways Department, the Consultant – Arup, and the Contractor – Driltech for their full support, making it possible, and delivering a very professional and knowledgeable presentation. 🙌👏 #iom3hk #HDC #sitevisits

🏆 Exciting News from the IOM3 Young Persons’ Lecture Competition 2024 (Hong Kong Heat)! 🌟 The YPLC 2024 (HK Heat) was successfully held on 19 September 2024. We are thrilled to announce that Mr. YU Sihao from the HKU emerged as the winner with his captivating topic ‘A Deep Learning-based Framework for Automatic Rock Core Logging’. He will represent The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) Hong Kong Branch at the Young Persons' World Lecture Competition Final in November 2024 and has been awarded a prize of $1500HKD! 🎉 🥈 YAO Yifan from the CityU clinched the 1st runner-up position, while our 2nd runner-up is TONG Chin Ching Cedric from the HKPolyU. As the President of the IOM3-HK branch, I am honored to serve as a judge for the Young Person Lecture Competition (HK Heat) this evening (19 Sep 2024). This event was a fantastic platform that showcased the talent and creativity of young presenters, and it was a privilege to be part of such an inspiring initiative. I was pleased to be joined on the judging panel by esteemed colleagues, including CityU Chair Professor JG Dai and our Council Member Franklin To. Their expertise and insights greatly enriched the evaluation process, making it a rewarding experience for all involved. A big thank you also goes to George Ho, James Yiu, and KL Lo for their invaluable on-site support. The competition not only highlights the innovative ideas of our youth but also fosters a spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing among participants. Witnessing the enthusiasm and passion of the young presenters was truly uplifting and reinforces the importance of nurturing the next generation of leaders in our field. I eagerly look forward to seeing how these talented individuals will continue to grow and contribute to our industry. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this event a success!
