Did you see JBA Bentley’s unique #Carbon saving syphon solution featured in #Innovation magazine? Forming part of the Don Regulators project, this innovative solution allowed the site team to create a dry working area to support the installation of a new fish pass on the River Rother. By utilising expertise from across JBA and JN Bentley, the completed Don Regulators project will provide greater resilience to #Flooding, whilst also ensuring that regulator gates remain operational despite the effects of #ClimateChange. This month’s Environment Agency #Innovation magazine features a range of projects we’ve supported, including our investigation into the potential uses and benefits of chemically treated softwood. By conducting a desk-based assessment to explore the applications and limitations of acetylated timber, we were able to recommend that it should be considered by #Engineers for use in a range of #FCERM settings. Last week we joined exhibitors, presenters and delegates from across the #FloodRiskManagement industry at the 21st Wales Flood Conference in #Cardiff. The conference, which was also attended by Deputy First Minister of Wales, Huw Irranca-Davies, represented a valuable opportunity to discuss the latest developments in flood risk management in #Wales. With the themes of #Resilience and #ClimateChange high on the conference agenda, it was great to see JBA's Technical Director, Ben Rabb, and Climate Resilience Transformation Lead, Phil Emonson join the programme of industry experts sharing their knowledge. To round off a brilliant day, JBA's Clare Burnell also claimed first place in the conference poster competition. Clare was named as the winner for her poster presentation on how #PropertyFloodResilience is helping to build #Resilience to #Flooding in Powys. A huge thank you to everyone who visited us at the JBA stand and to CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management), who in partnership with ICE Wales Cymru made the conference's return to an in-person event such a success.

Limerick City was one of two European ‘Lighthouse’ cities selected under the EU +CityxChange Programme to participate in a #ClimateChange pilot programme with the ambition of achieving #Sustainable urban ecosystems. As part of the scheme, GKinetic appointed us to deliver several #EnvironmentalImpactAssessments (EIAs) to secure permission for their demonstrator installation of #Hydrokinetic turbines on the River Shannon. Backed by Limerick City and County Council and other local partners, this project represents a major step towards utilising the river for energy generation in the city and pioneers a design that showcases the most advanced urban deployment of river turbine technology to date. The latest case-study from the Development Data Partnership explores how JBA's #GlobalFloodMaps data supported an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Water and Sanitation project to identify areas of exposure to #FloodRisk - prior to the implementation of #Resilient water and sanitation infrastructure in Peru’s Puno region. 👇 Through the Development Data Partnership JBA's #GlobalFloodMaps are providing an important source of information to support vulnerable communities in being better prepared and more resilient to the impacts of #ClimateChange. The limitations of conventional methods for predicting extreme #Floods were starkly highlighted by the recent flooding in Valencia. This is a risk that could affect the UK, where some places have experienced floods far higher than anything known before. A collaboration between JBA and Newcastle University, supported by our #JBALabs innovation accelerator programme, has investigated the potential of the physically-based model, SHETRAN, to simulate extreme events beyond the range of observed conditions at several catchments across the UK. Preliminary results suggest that the advanced technical capabilities of the SHETRAN model result in a far better simulation of the rapid flow responses and surface runoff typically noted during unprecedented events. Our next step is to investigate the inner workings of the model to infer what these results mean for the dominant #Hydrological processes across the study basins. This information will aid the development of #Resilient hydrological infrastructure over the coming years.
