You might be wondering the difference between our two fabrication facilities, Glengarnock and East Kilbride. Glengarnock hosts our HQ, where most of our typical steel fabrication takes place before being transported to site to build our structures. At Strubeam, we produce deep and heavy loaded beams and a variety of complex bespoke fabrications for our Bridge Divison, our structures, and as a stand alone product for our clients. ⏳50 Years of J&D Pierce! ⏳ 2025 will mark 50 years of J&D Pierce and in celebration in the lead up to our 50th birthday, we will be sharing some old photographs and the history of how J&D Pierce grew from one man to one of the country's largest structural steelwork specialists. We'll be sharing a story every #ThrowbackThursday, and will reach the present day just in time for our 50th year! 2020 was a strange year for everyone, with the world in lockdown and construction limited, investment was one of the best options available for well established businesses in the UK. Social distancing and work from home orders in effect, but many construction jobs still very much essential, it was important to find solutions that allowed production to continue. 🚛 Towing Tonnes 🚛 Happy December! To celebrate the lead up to our 50th year, we wanted to share a little more of where we have been, where we are, and where we are going at JDP. One thing that we are well known for (besides from incredible steelwork fabrication) is our vehicles. They are highly liveried and spotted all across the country by #truckspotters everywhere. Our fleet helps us tow, lift, and erect steel on all of our projects and it has grown massively over 50 years. Here is a photo of our very first fleet, made up of two cranes, two cars, two flat bed trucks and a compact van, each with their own driver. It's now 2018, a year that saw the rise of K-Pop, sent a car into space, and a royal wedding! At J&D Pierce, the theme of expansion continued in the companies busiest decade yet. With the installation of a fully automatic steel processing system and a new building to house it, the facilities were connected, resulting in one fast flow fabrication factory on 35acres of land, totalling 300,000sqft. The company was now able to produce in excess of 950Te per week. A new design and build division of 15 staff opened in Scarborough to focus on the large distribution warehouse market. 🌉 Building Bridges 🌉 This week we're looking at the incredible work of our Bridging Division, opened in 2022. Since then we've worked on an ever growing number of amazing projects across the UK. Bridging brings with it a whole new complexity of engineering and fabrication, which is why we've worked hard to establish our incredible bespoke fabrication facility in EK, STRUBEAM. Our next bridge is a whopper, and completed in May of last year. The Velindre Hospital access bridge is a single span ladder beam type structure fabricated from weathering grade steel plate which provides a new access road to the new Velindre Cancer Centre located in Cardiff. The bridge's design presented unique challenges, including pre-cambers, high skew angles, and a longitudinal elevation fall, adding complexity to the geometrical profiles. Our incredible design team navigated these complexities through careful planning at every stage of the erection sequence, ensuring the bridge was an exact fit and had total stability. 🌉 Building Bridges 🌉 This week we're looking at the incredible work of our Bridging Division, opened in 2022. Since then we've worked on an ever growing number of amazing projects across the UK. Bridging brings with it a whole new complexity of engineering and fabrication, which is why we've worked hard to establish our incredible bespoke fabrication facility in EK, STRUBEAM. First up, we have a jewel in our portfolio, seen by every Formula 1 fan in the country, the Silverstone Footbridge which joins the adjacent International Conference and Exhibition Centre to the trackside hotel. The covered walkway overlooking the Hamilton Straight start-finish line was completed in the October of 2022 and utilised around 200Te of structural steelwork. The new 80m bridge at the iconic Silverstone was designed and built by our incredible Bridging Division and involved the production of an asymmetric warran truss to offset footfall induced vibrations, and tubular framing and spider fixings to accommodate the faceted glass facades. 🏢 City Centre Construction 🏢 If you've been following along with our projects through the years, we've already demonstrated our skill for tight city centre construction in a variety of live environments. This kind of construction requires a strictly structured program for deliveries and erection, and the highest levels of health and safety. Our final city centre highlight has been a huge project at JDP until it's recent completion in July. Pilgrim's Quarter is a nine-storey office block project involving the preservation of the Grade 2 listed Art Deco façade of Carliol House within the new structure. The project involved the design and manufacture of a full façade structural steel retention system including temporary works and connection to the main façade. This 6000Te city centre project involved both rolled sections and Strubeam plate girders. Our team coordinated the concrete core connections, M&E service holes, along with designing over 9,000 steel connections. A tight site boundary required careful planning for steel deliveries with erection being carried out using mobile and tower cranes. Pilgrim has been a shining example of collaborative working, as we navigated extensive design and site-level changes accommodating for evolving logistical issues outside of our control. Even in constrained city centre environments, we utilise precise pre-construction schedules and apply innovation in every project we undertake. This accomplishment underscores our commitment to adaptability, efficient completion times, and delivery of exceptional results. The exceptional dedication of our site teams and effective site management enabled us to complete this inner-city project ahead of schedule. That concludes our tour of tight city centre construction!
