In our final post in this series, we reflect on the rich history of our Leeds manufacturing site, which has been pivotal in the field of orthopaedics. From the late 1940s, the Charles F. Thackray Ltd. firm collaborated with Sir John Charnley, the pioneer of modern total hip replacement surgery, to develop orthopaedic implants that changed lives. In 1990, Thackray became part of DePuy International, and following Johnson & Johnson's acquisition of DePuy in 1998, it further enriched our global orthopaedics business. Today, as Johnson & Johnson MedTech, we carry forward this site’s legacy of innovation and excellence. Surgical wound complications occur at higher rates than any other kind of adverse event in hospitalised patients, but these complications are still underreported. In 1924, Robert Wood Johnson II, marked a significant milestone by opening our very first overseas operating company in Slough, England. This venture was made possible through the acquisition of John Timpson and Company, a trusted partner and sales agent since 1896. The choice of Slough was a result of collaborative negotiations between managing partners, Mr. E.H. Selby and Mr. J. Butterfield, who both sought a location that wouldn’t be too far from their homes. After much discussion, Slough emerged as the perfect compromise, allowing us to establish roots in this vibrant community. We are proud to continue the legacy that started with our talented team from John Timpson, as we strive to meet the evolving needs of patients and communities across the UK & Ireland.
