Congratulations to Lewis Hunt on his recent promotion to Structural Engineer. Lewis began his journey with us as a work experience student from Kesgrave School in Ipswich, where he impressed his colleagues during a two-week placement. His promise resulted in him being offered the structural position in our Apprenticeship Program that year. Now in his final year of study, Lewis’s hard work and talent have earned him the opportunity to take on the role of Structural Engineer. In this position, he provides essential calculations and support for large-scale public and healthcare projects, as well as expert witness and residential projects. Congratulations to Richard Woodman and Nathan Christie on their recent appointments as Director in our Suffolk and Essex offices. Their new roles reflect our commitment to strengthening our Structural Engineering team even further. A Chartered Engineer with a background in civil and structural engineering and project management, Richard has successfully managed a diverse range of new build and refurbishment projects ranging from educational, residential, commercial, mixed-use, healthcare and civic structures, taking them from conception to demolition. His commitment to sustainable design and providing innovative solutions is integral to his work. Nathan is a Chartered Engineer with over 9 years’ experience in Structural Engineering. He has worked on a variety of projects including a technically complicated refurbishment scheme, which included new mezzanines within a prestigious central London office. Nathan has experience of working in healthcare, industrial, education, leisure and residential sectors and has also assisted Jon Chick on a variety of expert witness projects. Construction works have recently been completed on extensions to this lovely 18th Century Grade II listed cottage in Suffolk. It forms the end terrace of a row of four two-storey cottages and incorporates several architectural tricks to increase home space and functionality. Several previous extensions and outbuildings existed to the rear of the existing property, creating courtyards and disconnected spaces. Designed by Gorniak and McKechnie Ltd. architects, the proposals infilled the courtyard area with a double-height glazed atrium, and connected this space, via an infill lobby, to the outbuildings via a new connecting roof.   J P CHICK & PARTNERS LTD provided structural engineering design services, employing ‘lean design’ techniques, to ensure that all new structural elements could be incorporated, seamlessly into the historic building fabric. This required careful analysis and assessment of proposed deflections, such that the smallest size elements could be used, and did not intrude upon the architectural design. Today we are looking back at our involvement with the design of the redeveloped Woodbridge Café. This was a multidisciplinary project involving both our structural and environmental teams. Our structural team designed a structure that comprises a braced steel frame, constructed off a raft foundation, uniquely designed to ensure optimum commercial space. The raised floor design was put in place to limit the effects of potential flooding from the nearby River Deben. From a sustainability perspective, in order to minimise the amount of embodied carbon in the structure, the steelwork connections were designed as 'bolted' to ensure that the steel members can be easily dismantled and reused at a later date. Our structural team worked alongside our environmental team who completed a ground investigation, the results of which provided crucial insight to inform the structural design. Nicola brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our Essex office; he has over 7 years of experience in Structural Engineering across various sectors including residential, leisure, commercial, industrial and healthcare. His special interests in complex structures and sustainable design make him a perfect fit for our team. Alexander joins our Essex office as a graduate with a BSc (Hons) in Geology, and MSc in Environmental Geology and Contamination. He joins our growing site investigation team, undertaking desk studies, contaminated land investigations and supervising remediation projects.
