Home-grown feed processing and preservation

About us

Established in 1982, Kelvin Cave Ltd is the UK market leader in the development and supply of home-grown feed preservation and processing systems. We specialise in proven, effective silage preservatives and ensiling products, crimped and moist grain preservatives and grain processing machinery. We have pioneered and developed affordable solutions that enable ruminant livestock farmers to make better quality home-grown feeds, and reduce or eliminate their need for bought-in animal feedstuffs. Our success is due to our experienced team, all of them farming and livestock professionals, who share a wealth of knowledge in both practical farming and livestock nutrition. By eliminating or reducing dependency on bought-in feeds, farmers can safeguard against supply shortages and fluctuating market prices, producing feeds with high nutrient value and digestibility that require only easy, low-cost storage.

Technical Director. at Kelvin Cave Ltd.

I was pleased to be invited by Sean Lovegreen to join him in showing a group of his Lima Grain colleagues and farmers from The Netherlands our work in promoting the growing and feeding of home-grown proteins by visiting two of my customers who are improving their profitability, soil structure and fertility, and environmental credentials by feeding wholecrop beans in their beef finishing diets, and outline the work of The NCS Project . It was great to meet a very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate team and l hope some of the information we shared will be relevant and transferable to their customers back home.

  • With rising straw prices can you really afford to waste any this year? Kelvin Cave Ltd is pleased to be UK stockists for BaleShield. Tried and tested in Europe, this water repellent, breathable membrane is a simple and cost-effective way of protecting straw and hay bales from the inclement British weather significantly reducing waste and possible health problems resulting from using wet, mouldy bales. Several sizes are available along with hook and loop tapes to join them on larger stacks and simple screws to secure them. We also offer BaleSafe, a preservative which allows hay and straw to be baled safely to 25% moisture without wrapping. This increases quality, reduces dry matter loss, reduces fuel and labour and is far less weather dependant than trying to get bales dry. Finally these products are complemented by moisture meters for testing bales or loose crop in the field and simple reliable additive applicators for balers. Make sure you are getting the best from your straw and hay, give us a call today – 01458 252281.

  • Today is the last day of Great British Beef Week. It has been fun looking back at some recent case studies and celebrating our great British beef farmers. For our final case study we look at Cornsay Limousin in County Durham. Here the Suddes family has been successfully employing regenerative farming for years, boosting profits and lowering their carbon footprint.
