Our Grants Lead, Dr Claire Flanagan, has shared invaluable tips for tackling the next Innovate UK Smart Grants deadline, drawing from their extensive experience and insights from the most recent winners. With success rates hovering at 3-5%, preparation and strategy are critical to crafting a standout application. Read more below ⬇️
Securing grant funding for R&D intensive SMEs | R&D funding advisor | B Corp | Grant Writer | Bioeconomy | Biotech | Chemistry | AgriTech | Resource Recovery | BioEnergy | PRINCE2 | Innovation | Innovate UK
🌈 🌈 🌈With the next Innovate UK Smart Grants deadline rapidly approaching I have pulled together my list of top things to consider when developing your Smart application based on my extensive grant funding experience and recent scheme stats 🌈 🌈 🌈 💥Smart is a funding of last resort: If there are other grants available to support your proposed project idea you are highly unlikely to get funded under Smart so do make sure to fully explore all the alternative options before applying. This includes other forms of support such as investment, loans, crowd funding etc. 💥Stage of technology development: Considering Smart is for game-changing, high risk R&D ideas that will rapidly commercialise post-project, it is no surprise to see the majority of projects funded are in the Industrial Research category (~93% of recent winners). 💥Scheme limits: In any round, between 10-20% of applications are ineligible and are not even sent for assessment. Note the eligible project sizes and collaboration rules: £100-500K (@70-25%) 6-18 months duration which can be single applicant/collaborative projects, OR, £100K-£1Mn (@70-25%) 19-24 months duration which must be collaborative. 💥Smart is competitive: Success rates hover around 3-5% mark. It is critical to ensure you address all the assessment criteria in your responses in order to score top marks. % funding thresholds are usually from mid-80s so ideally you need to aim for a score of 85% plus to be in with a chance of securing funding. It is essential to justify and evidence your responses as much as possible. 💥Project size: Only a small proportion of large projects are funded (3 projects in the £500K - £1Mn range VS 43 sub-£500K projects were awarded funding in the last round). Remember these are funding limits not targets! Consider breaking down your overall technology development into smaller sized projects below the £500K limit mapped clearly against TRL milestones to increase your chances of success. 💥Reapply: over 50% of recent winners were resubmissions so if you were unsuccessful in previous funding competitions, consider revising and resubmitting your proposal. Use the assessor feedback to help identify areas of weakness where you can improve your bid to increase your overall score. 💫✨Although Smart is an ‘open’ funding scheme project concept and technology stage are critical. Before you put pen to paper get in touch to arrange a no obligation discussion to assess your project suitability and explore how we can potentially support you with your application to maximise your chances of success.✨💫 Kene Partners | B Corp™ #GrantWriter #SmartGrant #InnovateUK #Collaboration #Innovation #SMESupport
