Keyless has established a unique, proprietary approach to biometric data storage that allows us to confirm your identity without ever seeing or storing biometric data anywhere. 🚀 This is because we match biometric data in an encrypted format, without any decryption. We’re able to do this by using privacy-preserving cryptographic technique known as secure Multi-Party Computation (sMPC) that overcomes the flaws of existing decentralized models. Consider two millionaires who are interested in knowing who is richer without revealing their actual wealth. SMPC allows them to find this information out without revealing their answers. In Keyless’ context, #SMPC allows a user to send and retrieve their biometric data from the Keyless Cloud Service without revealing their data to anyone, including Keyless. sMPC involves two steps: ▪️During enrollment, a biometric profile is created on the user’s device using sMPC and stored in the cloud. Decentralized biometrics is an innovative authentication approach with a focus on privacy and designed to combine the benefits of local and server-side systems while addressing their drawbacks. Typically decentralized models split a user’s biometric data into pieces, or “shares”, and store them across multiple servers. While this method aims to enhance privacy, it carries risks since vendors often control enough shares to reconstruct the full biometric data. This setup is vulnerable to attacks, as compromising a few servers can expose all biometric data. Last week, we discussed the pros and cons of local biometrics. Let’s look at centralized biometrics now. 👇 Server-side biometrics provide better security because biometrics are tied to the app, ensuring that a user’s face is compared with their enrollment selfie. But they present a different challenge: they create centralized repositories of sensitive biometric data, which can become attractive targets for attackers. Now, this data isn’t just left; it is usually encrypted using a hash.
