We are the leading kidney research charity in the UK.

About us

Kidney Research UK is the largest UK charity dedicated to research into the prevention, treatment and management of kidney disease. Kidney Research UK also dedicates its work to improving patient care and raising awareness of kidney disease. Over three million lives in the UK are threatened by chronic kidney disease and it can strike anyone at any age, male or female. This is why Kidney Research UK is dedicated to improving the understanding of kidney disease, its causes and treatments. The only treatments available to patients are a transplant, in which there is a huge shortage of available organ donors, or a life on dialysis, a life sustaining treatment - but which can severely restrict daily life. The charity is making important scientific breakthroughs all the time and medical researchers are constantly developing improvements in treatments. However, we can only currently fund one in five research projects presented to us and scientific advances can only be sustained, and improved, if we succeed in raising our income and for that we need your help.

  • Can Dr Horia Stanescu and the team understand the genetic causes of common childhood kidney disease? Steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) is the most common cause of kidney disease in children. It causes the kidneys to leak too much protein into the urine, resulting in swelling. Looking at fragments of genetic material (DNA sequencing) and the genetic causes of SSNS will improve its diagnosis and is an important step towards improving treatments, making them more targeted and with fewer side effects. • “Because today it's my life on the line, but tomorrow it could be yours.” Award-winning artist Terrell Lewis performed a captivating spoken word poem at The Andy Cole Fund Gala, earning a standing ovation. His powerful poem shed light on the harsh realities of living with kidney disease. The piece was inspired by real stories and experiences shared by patients on their journey with this condition, bringing their emotions to life. Our heartfelt thanks to Terrell for capturing the raw emotions and lived experiences of those impacted by kidney disease. [Video description: Terrell and Kevanie are on stage. This follows their successful clinical trial which showed a significant improvement in patient-reported quality-of-life and a reduced cost to the NHS. Lucy Sreeves, executive director at Kidney Research UK said: “We have shown the rate of growth of the kidney population threatens to overwhelm the NHS, therefore investment in innovative approaches to patient care is essential. Kidney Beam offers just this.” To read more and find out how you can get access Kidney Beam, click here: https://bit.ly/4gP8GEA Kidney Beam [Image description: A person holding a smartphone with only their hands visible. • What is living kidney donation, and why is it needed? In the UK, more than 6,000 people are currently on the NHS waiting list for a kidney transplant. Six people die every week while waiting for a kidney. Living kidney donation involves someone voluntarily giving one of their kidneys to a person with kidney failure who needs a transplant. It is often the best treatment option for many patients. Anyone can come forward to be tested and considered as a donor. This could include a friend or family member, or, in some cases, individuals may choose to donate a kidney to a stranger on the transplant waiting list. Kidney donations can save up to three lives through the Living Kidney Sharing Scheme and also help reduce NHS costs, as dialysis costs approximately £34,000 per patient each year. The decision to become a donor can be overwhelming, but there is lots of information and support on the Make Your Mark website.
