On this rainy sunday, on the beautiful campus of King's College London, I had the opportunity to speak to a diverse audience of college students at a banking and finance conference organised by the King's Banking & Finance Society and the Oxford Finance Society. I was asked (as is often the case) what I believe to be the main difference between the academic world students currently operate in, and the finance world they aim to join outside of the college grounds. It was an opportunity to weave into the conversation some of the valuable insights from the great teachings of Larry McEnerney (link below to a YouTube video of a most insightful lecture ⬇️). Specifically how we communicate value in complex fields. Our writing and content must transcend the ordinary to truly impact our audience. Put differently, it’s not just about the 'what'; it's about the 'so what'? As an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, I see firsthand the thirst for knowledge that drives the next generation of finance leaders. Discussions like today’s are reminders that our greatest lesson might just be in how we share knowledge. As McEnerney teaches, our content must be first and foremost valuable and relevant to our target audience (not just clear, organised and persuasive — all things that it can be without being valuable nor relevant!). But it's not just about having valuable content; it's about succeeding in having our audience see the value it offers them and changing their perspective of the world or a specific problem they look at. So let’s not just communicate for the sake of it; Let’s connect with purpose, with value, and with a keen understanding of our audience's needs.
