Exciting news!🔋 Our 'Planet Positive Framework' developed in collaboration with GS8 takes centre stage as the definitive guiding approach in the new carbon-positive development, announced last week by Octopus Energy and GS8. This development will feature 113 innovative homes designed with sustainability in mind, storing more carbon than they emit throughout construction and maintenance and generating more energy on-site than they use in a year. It will become the largest ‘Zero Bills’ community in the UK and the first in the world to offer Octopus Energy’s ‘Zero Bills’ tariff in connection with a revolutionary microgrid with centralised battery storage. This project reinforces our commitment to reducing carbon footprints and setting a new standard for environmentally responsible development. 🌏 🔗 For more information on the ‘Zero Bills’ development with Octopus Energy, please visit: https://lnkd.in/ecGVHGbd #CarbonPositiveHousing #SustainableDevelopment #SustainableHousing #ZeroBills #microgridcommunity #SustainableLiving

We're really excited to announce our collaboration with The Crown Estate and GS8! Following the successes of the award-winning Arbour project, we’re continuing our partnership with GS8 to deliver planet-positive homes at scale. We were tasked with designing holistic sustainable homes – not just in terms of carbon impact – but additionally balancing the sometimes conflicting demands of material usage, energy consumption and generation, water use, overheating and daylighting among others. Over the past two years, we’ve provided cutting-edge modelling, analysis and collaborated with an incredible design team to bring this vision to life. These homes will set a new benchmark for sustainability: 👉 Less than 300 kgCO2e/m² upfront carbon 👉 Less than 450 kgCO2e/m² life cycle embodied carbon 👉 Less than 35 kWh/m²yr energy use intensity 👉 Less than 75 litres/person/day potable water consumption 👉 Guaranteed zero bills for all residents 👉 Connect to a site-wide smart microgrid, generating more onsite energy per year than the homes use Sustainability isn’t just about numbers; it’s about people and community. As members of Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL), we ensured that the site followed DEAL framework for community engagement. Our friends at New Practice led the co-design of the central space, which was instrumental in fostering a sense of ownership for the residents of Wootton. We also anticipate achieving a 90% biodiversity net gain across the site through carefully planned landscaping by Match Landscape Architects (Jim Kelly), ensuring the homes are not just part of the environment, but enhance it.🌿🪴 This project represents more than just homes - it’s a blueprint for sustainable development at scale. Zero-carbon living isn’t just possible, it’s happening now. Happy Friday! 🌞 At KLH, we’re passionate about helping our team achieve their professional goals through Chartership, such as IEMA and CIBSE. We work hard to find the right accreditation to match their career ambitions with areas for business growth. 🎉 Last week, we had an exciting milestone to celebrate. Hannah Cohen (PIEMA), our Sustainability Advisor, officially became an IEMA Practitioner! The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) is the UK’s largest professional body for environmental practitioners, and achieving Practitioner status is no small feat. Achieving Practitioner status is a reflection of Hannah’s commitment to embedding sustainability into organisational policies, promoting life cycle thinking and tackling challenging initiatives like Science-Based Targets (SBTi). We’re incredibly proud of Hannah, along with our other IEMA accredited team members, Borja Bustamante Mediavilla (PIEMA) and Lizzie O'Reilly (MIEMA), for leading the way and driving meaningful change toward a more sustainable future. Here’s to continuing to push boundaries in sustainability! 💚 🌍 #IEMAaccreditation #sustainabilityadvisor #builtenvironmentsustainability

We are thrilled to be a part of this ambitious pilot project with The Crown Estate. Building on the achievements of The Arbour and our valued partnership with GS8, we look forward to scaling these successes further. #sustainableconstruction #TheArbour #TheCrownEstate #planetpositivehousing
Meet our development partners for three housing demonstration projects that seek to find solutions to some of the UK’s #housing challenges. 🏡 🏗GS8 will deliver 50 net zero carbon homes in Wootton, Bedfordshire. Known for its award-winning, planet-positive developments, gs8 will pioneer regenerative development principles, including a market leading approach to carbon reduction and de-constructable homes for future reuse. 🏗TOWN. will oversee 80 homes at Westwick Row in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, adjacent to The Crown Estate's East Hemel site. The project will explore innovative community engagement methods and alternative housing models, including collaborative housing and intergenerational living. 🏗 igloo Regeneration will lead the development of 60 homes in Knutsford, Cheshire, exploring low-carbon infrastructure delivery and adopting a community-first approach to design and construction. The housing demonstration projects aim to address challenges such as the affordability crisis and how to implement #innovation in housing design, before passing on our learnings to the wider industry. By working with SMEs, we can explore new commercial models and building capacity for smaller developers to deliver sustainable housing at scale across the country, while exploring new building materials, construction methods and technologies. KLH Sustainability reposted this
Making ready-mix concrete is similar to the art of baking - a masterful balance where every ingredient counts! (Shout-out to Lizzie O'Reilly who put it so perfectly on our visit day). ♻️ Too much of one thing or too little of another and the concrete 'recipe' could go sideways. The team at Aggregate Industries UK truly knows how to whip up the perfect 'batch' for each specific use! Last week, our team at KLH Sustainability had the opportunity to experience this up close during our visit to the Aggregate Industries facility at Modern Wharf. With muddy boots and the bright sun overhead, we spent the day hearing about their process of obtaining recycled aggregates and sequestering carbon back into those recycled aggregates from concrete. Is that not fascinating? Thank you to Jasen Gauld FICT, Anh Nguyen & Nick Powell ILM7 from Aggregate Industries, and Daniel Thompson, Jason Tubbs & Gary van Heuven from Sivyer Group for taking the time to give us a detailed tour - Borja Bustamante Mediavilla's smile in his high-vis says it all! 😁 🙌 #aggregate #sustainablesolutions #recycledaggregate #sequestration

Well done to Lizzy Pettitt for volunteering your time to support A Level students to better understand sustainable retrofit opportunities as well as guiding them in exploring careers in the built environment! At KLH we provide our employees with 2 volunteering days a year to give back to the local community or industry, and it is events like this that show us why we do it! Give the full blog post about Lizzy’s volunteering time a read- linked below. #retrofit #sustainability #volunteering #builtenvironment
Last month Lizzy Pettitt, CIBSE YEN London Chair, and a team of volunteers spent a day with A Level students exploring sustainable solutions for historic places of worship 🌱 As part of the Mapping Energy project with Nottingham Trent University, students mapped low-carbon heat sources for Square Mile Churches - Diocese of London, blending heritage with innovation to tackle climate change. We caught up with Lizzy to reflect on her volunteering experience. "It was inspiring to see how passionate the students were about climate change and so motivated to embark on careers that make an impact".
