Yesterday, Laing O’Rourke in collaboration with Barnsley College and T3 Training & Development, opened the UK’s first dedicated modern methods of construction (MMC) training facility. The first of its kind training centre represents a groundbreaking step in addressing the UK's construction skills shortage and modernising the industry. It will be the first purpose-built facility to offer a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Construction Assembly installation, providing people with the technical and digital skills required to assemble construction and engineering solutions that have been manufactured offsite. Laing O’Rourke director, Peter Lyons, said: "We are proud and excited to launch this first-of-a-kind training facility and to have created a training course that will help accelerate change across our sector. Not only will it enhance the skills of our current directly employed workforce, but it will also attract a more diverse range of people to consider a career in construction. “Only through the wider use of digital technologies and modern methods of construction can we transform productivity and create better work and careers for people. It’s a change we need to make to ensure we can deliver the essential infrastructure the country needs, and which underpins our quality of life." Thank you to Select Plant Hire, Explore Plant and Transport Solutions, Expanded , Explore Manufacturing - part of Laing O'Rourke, Crown House Technologies, CEMEX UK and Patera Engineering Limited for their help and support in the planning and construction of this new facility, they have been integral to the success of the project. Meet Joshua Jeche. Joshua joined Laing O'Rourke on our Summer and Industrial Placement Programme earlier this year. His time with us encouraged Joshua to apply for a place on our Graduate Programme when he finished his studies and he joined us full time from September. Are you a #graduate based in the UK looking for an opportunity in the construction industry? We still have some roles available on both our Graduate and Summer and Industrial Placement Programmes. Opportunities will close on Monday (2 December), so get your application in quickly. https://lnkd.in/dDdKJMia #ExpectToBeSurprised #PushTheBoundaries #construction

We’re pleased to have won the Best Use of Technology - Smart Data Collection in Construction - at the Construction News TechFest awards last night. The award was for our PrecastDNA project which was implemented in partnership with Explore Manufacturing, the team on the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities project, and Converge. The system is designed to automatically track the movement of precast components, both at the CEMC facility and on project sites. It uses sensors attached to each precast unit, with gateways placed throughout the factory yard and on lifting equipment. These gateways capture sensor signals, enabling accurate geolocation and comprehensive tracking of product movements, providing full digital traceability. The data captured by the system reveals key details of precast operations, such as which equipment was used to lift each product, how long each movement took, and the order in which products were relocated. This insight into operational performance helps optimise workflows and improve project efficiency. Congratulations to the team on this well deserved award. Our Sydney Central Station Metro (CSM) project was awarded a 6 Star Green Star rating for the final Design & As Built score earlier this year. This is the first of its kind on the Sydney Metro network and is considered “World Leadership” in building design and construction. Awarded by the Green Building Council of Australia, Green Star is a rating system used to assess the sustainable design, construction and operation of buildings, fit outs and communities. CSM received a 6 Star rating based on the following categories: Management, Indoor Environment Quality, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Land Use, Emissions and Innovation. The team is particularly proud to have been awarded 10 out of a possible 10 points in the innovation category. These credits aim to challenge building owners and contractors to think past sustainability as being solely centred around environmental impacts and focus on socio-economic considerations as well. Key highlights include: - A 99% reduction in Potable Water Consumption compared with the Standard Practice Building - A 100% offset of operational energy - Exceeded our targeted expenditure with Indigenous-owned businesses - Implementation of a Climate Adaptation Plan including adaptations for extreme, high and medium level risks - 5,813 individuals or 81% of all personnel (contractors and subcontractors) that have worked on the CSM project have received the required training during their induction to meet Innovation Challenge ‘Contractor Education’ - 382% total cumulative savings across seven Life Cycle Environmental indicators (such as climate change and ozone layer depletion) (plus the assessment of five additional impact categories) associated with materials selection, delivery phase and operational energy efficiency, compared with a reference project Since 2018, the team has not only worked towards achieving the contractual five stars, but laid the groundwork to achieve a six star rating, in both the Design Review and As-Built submissions. During preparation, the Central Station Main Works team worked closely with consultants, subcontractors and our client to ensure that the metro station at Central Station met all of the credit requirements. These aspects ranged from our rainwater system and adiabatic chillers to the responsible sourcing of products and materials, and the training delivered in project inductions.

An insightful session and healthy debate at the CIPS - The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply Sustainable Procurement & Supply Summit in London yesterday. Our Head of Procurement for Europe, @George Mosey BSc MSc MSt MRICS CertIOSH, delivered a thought-provoking presentation entitled "Decarbonising an industry: our journey so far". He talked about the work we have done to baseline our data and develop ambitious decarbonisation targets which have been validated by the SBTi, and the tools we are using with supply chain partners to accelerate progress towards net zero. Was great to be joined on the panel by @Nina Cardinal from Heidelberg Materials UK and @Ian Heptonstall from Supply Chain Sustainability School (UK) - valued partners with whom we are excited to be collaborating. #CIPSSummitLondon #sustainableprocurement #construction #builtenvironment

We have enjoyed connecting with our supply chain partners during our recent Supply Chain Forums in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and Brisbane. The golden thread of our project success is the strong relationships we build with our partners. Our fortunes are intertwined so it is always great to share insights, collaborate, and explore ways to elevate the way we deliver projects together. Thank you to all our partners who attended. We are excited about delivering more nation-shaping infrastructure together in the coming years. #PowerofExperience

Community members, families and friends recently had an unforgettable experience at the Sydney Metro West – Western Tunnelling Package site! Hosted by the Gamuda Australia and Laing O’Rourke Consortium team, the Clyde site opened its doors to more than 400 attendees across two days for a behind-the-scenes look at this landmark infrastructure project. Families and friends got a rare view of the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) stationed in the Clyde launch box, ready to embark on their journey towards Parramatta and Westmead. Plus, for the first time, guests were able to explore the Tunnelling and Infrastructure Academy, spending time in the TBM operator’s cabin and a Virtual Reality room that transported them inside the TBM and the tunnels. #PowerofExperience #SydneyMetroWest #Construction
