Tracking the connections between health and climate change, with strategic and financial support from the Wellcome Trust
About us
Climate change threatens to undermine the last 50 years of gains for public health, intensifying heatwaves and extreme weather events, worsening flood and drought, altering the spread of infectious diseases, and exacerbating poverty and mental ill-health. Crucially, the response to climate change brings immense benefits for human health, with cleaner air, healthier diets, and more liveable cities. The Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change exists to monitor this transition from threat to opportunity. We are a collaboration of over 120 leading experts from 35 universities and UN agencies across the globe, bringing together climate scientists, engineers, energy, economists, political scientists, public health professionals, and doctors. Each year our findings are published annually in medical journal The Lancet ahead of the UN climate change negotiations. Our data makes clear how climate change is affecting our health, the consequences of delayed action and the health benefits of a robust response. The Lancet Countdown works to ensure that health is at the centre of how governments understand and respond to climate change. This ranges from ensuring policymakers have access to high-quality evidence-based guidance, through to providing the health profession with the tools they need to improve public health.

📣 Contribute to the development of new Lancet Countdown Europe indicators! Read on for details of our upcoming webinar to find out more... ➡️ What is a Lancet Countdown indicator? The Lancet Countdown in Europe is a research collaboration led by Cathryn Tonne and Joacim Rocklöv. Using indicators to track an aspect of the relationship between health and climate change, the reports produced by the Lancet Countdown provide scientifically sound, relevant, representative, and reliable overviews of the links between health and climate change. We have identified the following priority areas for indicator development for the 2026 Europe report: ⭕ Adaptation, planning, and resilience for health ⭕ Mitigation (i.e. Healthy, low-carbon travel, active travel) ⭕ Economics and finance ⭕ Indicators for European cities ➡️ How to get involved The Lancet Countdown in Europe is hosting an open webinar for recognized researchers in their field, to introduce the scope of the report, indicator criteria and the submission and development process of new indicators. If you have expertise in any of the priority fields identified, we would like to invite you to attend our webinar and to consider the possibility of developing an indicator for the next report. Webinar details: 📅 Monday, 9th December, 11:00 CET 🔗 Zoom Webinar Registration: https://lnkd.in/eArWiHBq

It's health day at #COP29, and the stakes couldn't be higher. In the words of António Guterres: “Failure is not an option" The 2024 Report of The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change reveals that we are facing record-breaking health threats, yet climate change action is limited by a scarcity of funding. COP29 must deliver climate finance which centres health. The New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance is due to be adopted, and arrangements for the Loss and Damage (L&D) Fund will be considered and approved. 👨⚕️👩⚕️ So how can action to protect health be better integrated into these mechanisms?
