Connecting people and place through landscape
About us
At LDA Design, we make great places and shape the world around us for the better. We do this by connecting people and place through landscape. The origin of the word landscape is to create a place where people belong. We follow the principles of ‘first life, then spaces, then buildings’. Whether we are designing a new district, restoring a park or regenerating an estate, we start with what people want and need. LDA Design led the final landscape masterplan and detailed design for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of Europe’s most successful new parklands. We have designed and delivered some of the UK’s most challenging city centre public realm projects, including London’s Battersea Power Station, Stratford Waterfront and Strand Aldwych. This work includes George Street in Edinburgh and the transformation of public realm in Newcastle City Centre. We have developed a public realm strategy for Liverpool that will shape the centre for the next 25 years. Our award-winning partnership with Camden has transformed West End streets, carving out new green space and creating a healthier, safer, and more pleasant experience for pedestrians and cyclists. The climate crisis is the biggest challenge of our generation. As the UK weans itself off fossil fuels, a substantially increased demand for a reliable and secure mix of low-carbon energy lies ahead. Our long-standing commitment to renewable energy, since its infancy, places us at the forefront to help clients respond to this global challenge. Our experience, together with our creativity and practical appreciation of issues, allow us to provide robust advice and leadership that reflects an understanding of commerciality, risk and opportunity. We helped secure consent for Hornsea Three, which will be the UK’s largest offshore windfarm. LDA Design is proud to be 100% employee owned. We are landscape architects, urban designers, planners, environmental planners and EIA coordinators.

This #SketchFriday, we go travelling with LDA Design director, Cannon Ivers. Cannon takes us on a hop, skip and jump from #Venice to the Great Wall of China, from Hong Kong to #Boston, #Florence to London and to Pisa’s Leaning Tower. Cannon captures his travels in his notebook wherever he goes. His advice? Put pen or pencil to paper and keep drawing and don’t think too much about it. It’s a skill that builds over time, sketch by sketch. Happy sketching, everyone and Happy Friday too. #SketchFriday #Sketching #Drawing #LineDrawings #Inspiration #Art #Culture #UrbanDesign #PublicRealm #LandscapeArchitecture #LandscapeDesign #GreatPlacetoWork

We’ve been working closely with Colchester City Council, LCR Property, Haworth Tompkins, HAT Projects and a brilliant project team to help shape the #regeneration of St Botolph’s Quarter, to create attractive, welcoming spaces, improving connectivity and celebrating Colchester’s rich history. And now we’d love to know what everyone thinks. The proposals include turning a car park into a fantastic new public square, which can be used for community events and markets. A scenic pedestrian route will also link Colchester Town station to Colchester Castle via a new station entrance and heritage trail. This trail will guide visitors through St Botolph's Priory, past the Roman Wall on Priory Street towards the Castle, unveiling the heart of the city centre but also creating a great arrival for people pulling into the station. There are two engagement events next week at St Botolph's Church – so do drop by for a chat or share your thoughts via an online survey. 📅 Tuesday, 28 January – 2.30pm to 5.30pm Wednesday, 29 January – 4.30pm to 8pm Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eC7Uk4mZ Great working with you #Colchester, Colchester City Council, LCR Property, Haworth Tompkins, HAT Projects, Price & Myers, Newsteer Real Estate Advisers, Alan Baxter, Skelly & Couch, Stockdale and SYSTRA Cannon Ivers Tom McCreesh #placemaking #ColchesterCity #landscapearchitecture #urbandesign #planning #community #betterplaces #greenerplaces

With the days already visibly lengthening, it’s time to pull on our boots and head outdoors. This week’s #SketchFriday by Clare Wilks celebrates the beauty, power and detail of trees at this time of the year. Clare revisits specific trees in places she knows well in #Bristol where she leads our studio. She also sketches them in Pembrokeshire and Ireland. Clare loves the intricacies of each tree and feels that sketching them gives her strength… or at least a moment’s meditation. We hope Clare’s sketches inspire you as the weekend approaches and there's a glimmer of some free time. #SketchFriday #Trees #Forests #Landscape #LandscapeDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign #GreatPlacetoWork #BristolStudio

As promised, here's a clip of our video from our competition entry with Howells I Nissen Richards Studio I Atelier Ten & Sillage for a proposed new museum in #Belgrade celebrating the life and work of Nikola Tesla, #Serbia's most famous scientist, engineer and innovator. It gives a fantastic sense of how the arrival square, with it's magnetic lighting design and green pavilions, would cosset and sweep visitors into the museum and towards an exciting, immersive experience - a fitting tribute to #Tesla's legacy. Great work, everyone. What a fantastic collaborative experience this has been. Well done LDA Design's Benjamin Walker Evgeny Didorenko Weihua Zhou Huiyu Fu. #Howells #LDADesign #NikolaTesla #Tesla #NikolaTeslaMuseum #Serbia #Belgrade #BelgradeWaterfront #designcompetition #architecture #landscapearchitecture #landscapedesign #publicrealm #heritage #culture #bettercity #greenercity

An international #design competition set the challenge to turn a derelict 100-year-old paper mill, situated in the emerging #Belgrade Waterfront, into a new must-visit museum paying tribute to the maverick vision and legacy of inventor, Nikola Tesla. The proposal put forward by Howells LDA Design Nissen Richards Studio Atelier Ten and Sillage features a series of dramatic, choreographed spaces designed to appeal to all ages, and including an inviting arrival square. In this vision, generous public spaces are #biodiverse and climate resilient, playful and welcoming, with room for performance and for bringing learning outdoors. The design uses light, sound and space – inside and out – to create an unforgettable, immersive experience. Galleries flow around a central atrium, marked by the paper mill’s distinctive chimney. In awarding our team a prize, out of 46 entries, the judges praised the submission’s dramatic #landscape and clearly defined elements, including the Halo lighting installation and magnetic floor design. They also noted how the approach integrated the museum into the wider context of the city, to provide a lively new attraction. Well done to all of the team, from LDA Design this includes Benjamin Walker Evgeny Didorenko Weihua Zhou and Huiyu Fu. Next time! Congratulations to Zaha Hadid Architects and Bureau Cube Partners. Head here for more on our designs: https://lnkd.in/epeShVJQ And here for the competition details: https://lnkd.in/ePjZK2cE We'll share a video in the morning. #NikolaTesla #Tesla #NikolaTeslaMuseum #Serbia #Belgrade #BelgradeWaterfront #designcompetition #landscapearchitecture #landscapedesign #publicrealm #heritage #culture #bettercity #greenercity

📢 Lovely news to share. Our work with Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust to reimagine the street the hospital stands on is an #InspireFutureGenerations Health & Place winner. The TET (ThorntonEducationTrust) #IFG awards celebrate work that puts young people at the heart of the built environment design process. Fair to say, we're delighted. This project reimagines Great Ormond Street as London's healthiest hospital street – a welcoming, child-friendly, #climate-resilient place that also fully supports essential hospital logistics. Up to 750 sick children and their carers arrive at Great Ormond Street Hospital every day, and the aim is to make sure their experience is a better, healthier one, improving air quality and creating space for play and comfortable places to sit. This vision includes rain gardens, communal dining and seasonal planting. Doorstep play would make a big difference to patient experience, and there would be respite too for carers and staff. The hope is that other city hospital streets would follow. Well done to Magali Thomson, #placemaking lead for Great Ormond Street Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust, LDA Design London Borough of Camden and Norman Rourke Pryme | Certified B Corp™️. And from LDA Design, Scott Carroll and Kirsty Barker. When the planning application for #Waterbeach New Town East was approved at the tail end of last year, we were pretty excited. It’s been a 20-year project for us, so you can just imagine how our team of masterplanners, EIA consultants, landscape architects, environmental planners and ecologists felt. It was a joyful full stop to the year. So, to kick off 2025, we wanted to enjoy that special moment for a little longer by sharing sketches hinting at what life could be like in Waterbeach NTE, with its friendly neighbourhoods, mostly car-free streets and long views out to the Fens. These sketches are by LDA Design director Bernie Foulkes and, quite simply, we love them. Thank you, Bernie. Happy Sketch Friday, everyone. Let’s celebrate talent wherever we see it and fill the year with friendship and promise. #SketchFriday #sketching #WaterbeachNTE #placemaking #newsettlements #masterplanning #planning #EIA #landscapearchitecture #environmentalplanning #landscapedesign #fens

📢 Union Terrace Gardens in #Aberdeen and West End Project in #London are winners in the 2025 national Civictrustawards, two of only 39 successful projects chosen from more than 300 submissions. A wonderful way to kick off the LDA Design year. Well done, everyone. In addition, Union Terrace Gardens is one of just seven projects chosen to receive a national Selwyn Goldsmith Award for Universal Design. A moment of pride for a team that put #inclusion at the heart of plans to rethink the Gardens. The #CivicTrust awards recognise the best of design in the built environment. Set up in 1959, it is Europe’s longest running awards scheme and also one of the most highly regarded. It is operated as a not-for-profit. We’re over the moon to receive this national recognition. Thank you to the judges for seeing that both projects realise bold council ambitions to create better, greener, more accessible places. For people and for nature. A Homes England site on the outskirts of #Cheddar, and within Somerset’s stunning Mendip Hills, has secured unanimous #planning support from Somerset Council for up to 100 new homes, alongside a 60-bed care home, plus extra-care units, workplaces and a nursery. Good news for LDA Design’s planners, masterplanners and environmental planners who supported Homes England in its application to vary consent, after permission was first secured in 2023 by the site’s former owners. Council members praised the revised application for its improved response to the site’s topography and the introduction of a drainage pond as a more ecological and sustainable way of dealing with surface water. The brownfield site was formerly home to a Yeo Valley dairy storage facility. Homes England will now demolish the existing commercial buildings to prepare the site for a developer. Work will begin early this year. Great working with Homes England CampbellReith and TEP - The Environment Partnership. And well done to the LDA Design team of Susie Byrne MRTPI Paul Connelly Rebecca Frost Mark Stewart Katarzyna Raczkowska Ian Houlston Olli Wheeler Sian Berkley. #HomesEngland #Somerset #Mendips #newhomes #placemaking #planning #planningsuccess #masterplanning #environmentalplanning #LVIA
