The Leathersellers' targets to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Nicholas Tusting, Master (Chair) of the Leathersellers said: “Our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative speaks to the importance of our roles as stewards. From our membership to our historical and cultural assets there is an expectation that we must pass on a better organisation – an ambition we have endeavoured to achieve from our home in the City of London for 600 years. Our net-zero targets recognise that environmental security is a significant factor in the accomplishment of our long-term objectives and helps us plan, sustainably, for the future.” Read more about our targets and what steps we have already taken to reduce our carbon emissions: https://lnkd.in/gEpM9zhC #netzero #cityoflondon

We are excited to announce the launch of a new report “Pregnant and then Blue: The value of MumsAid counselling for new and expectant mothers” which demonstrates the effectiveness of the MumsAid model. It is widely known that 1 in 5 expectant mothers experience depression, so we are so proud to be working to support women in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and South-East London. The report evidences that: 📌 76% experience significant improvement in their depression 📌 MumsAid's work equates to £10,000 annual economic value on average per mother supported 📌 1 in 3 mothers supported by MumsAid counselling recover from depression Find out more and read the full report here: https://bit.ly/4f5bY54 We hope the findings can be used to evidence the voluntary sector's capability and encourage policymakers to consider our model as a blueprint for future initiatives on maternal mental health. Thank you to @probonoecon for their work on this report. Thanks also to our dedicated team at MumsAid for their dedication and commitment to our cause. Earth-minded: How UK leather pioneers are setting global standards in sustainability Leather remains prevalent in our everyday lives; a material tradition, rooted in an understanding of nature and natural processes that humanity has kept up for thousands of years. This legacy is now informing a modern discourse, with different challenges and opportunities arising as part of the climate crisis. As resources like leather are put under the microscope, its place as a sustainable material is being championed by UK companies, brands, and individuals for the benefit of a global industry. The power of music to transform young lives. Read our latest long read about social mobility and how music helps raise aspirations and increase confidence: https://lnkd.in/ec258yP6 "The performance had a huge impact on the children emotionally, socially and academically. They were so proud of themselves. Several children told me it was the best day of their life. It also had a knock-on effect on their academic life. If you have experiences, you have memories, vocabulary, language, visuals and imagery. That’s everything you need to be a good writer." Congratulations to Preethi Kosanam, winner of the inaugural Young Leatherworker of the Year Award. Great to be collaborating with and supporting the work of Heritage Crafts.
London leatherworker Preethi Kosanam has won the inaugural Young Leatherworker of the Year Award, supported by The Leathersellers Foundation, including a £1,000 prize awarded at a special presentation at Eltham Palace on Tuesday 26 November 2024. The award celebrates a young leatherworker who has made an outstanding start to their craft career. The winner is highly skilled amongst their peers, whilst raising the perceived value of their craft through sharing and awareness raising. They have given themselves a fantastic chance of achieving long-term success, perhaps overcoming disadvantage or setbacks along the way. Preethi Kosanam is a graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chennai, where she specialised in leather garments and accessories, and now studies at the London College of Fashion. Most recently, she won the prestigious Dents Prize for the most commercial and innovative glove design. She is deeply committed to creating products that are not only functional but also profoundly expressive. She uses craftsmanship as a medium to address today’s pressing issues in fashion, such as sustainability, ethics and consumer responsibility. The two other finalists for the award were Ana Del Rio, a fashion designer specialising in leathercraft and the founder of her own brand ANA DEL RIO, and Shuyen Chen, a bookbinder on the Graduate Program at West Dean College who won the Best Craftsperson Award in the inaugural Edward James Bookbinding Competition. How Leathersellers’ Student Grants are helping people to pursue their passions at university and set their course for the future. “Doing a degree in Midwifery is full-time,” says Khadija isack, who has just finished her studies at Kingston University London. “You have to work twelve-and-a-half-hour shifts, nights and weekends, and sometimes you’re on call too. It’s almost impossible to take care of your academic work and take on a part-time job as well.” “Thanks to the Student Grant from the Leathersellers’ Foundation, I was able to love my degree and give it my all without having to worry about additional financial pressures. It was absolutely incredible to have that support throughout my degree. To be honest, I’m not sure what I’d have done without it.” With thanks to the Jack Petchey Foundation who have contributed £15,000 to the Student Grants Programme, to be spent over three years, helping to support the ambitions of young people. For the coming year, five students have the status of being joint Leathersellers’ Foundation and Jack Petchey Foundation Scholarship awardees, including Khadija, pictured here. The Surplus Leather Project – working to support a thriving and connected UK leather industry. With thanks to our wholesale partner, Abbey England Ltd., the Surplus Leather Project works with tanneries to donate leather to education partners across the UK, giving students the opportunity to work with the material and develop skills. Nicholas Tusting, Master (Chair) of the Leathersellers said: "We’re proud to be working closely with Abbey England to deliver the Surplus Leather Project, which we are now expanding following a successful pilot phase where surplus material was donated by three tannery partners and re-packaged to provide a range of leathers to six higher education partners across the UK. Its success has meant the Leathersellers’ Foundation has committed additional funding over the course of the next year. This will enable more education partners to offer design and making students the opportunity to learn skills associated with leathercraft, and to discover more about leather as a sustainable and versatile material.” Thanks to tannery partners Scottish Leather Group; Charles F Stead & Co Ltd; Waltham Tannery; Sedgwick; and GH Leathers. And education partners Birmingham City University; Central Saint Martins University of The Arts London; De Montfort University; London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London; Royal College of Art; University of Northampton; and the University of South Wales. In collaboration with Better Purpose, the Leathersellers’ Foundation has published a high-level evaluation of its Sixth Form Scholarships and Student Grant Programmes to determine their impact on social mobility. With thanks to Better Purpose, Colfe's School, and the incredible students we support. The report has revealed that our funding is: · Enabling access to different educational opportunities. · Enabling students to make the most of their time at university by building social capital through joining clubs or associations, volunteering, and studying rather than working to support themselves. · Broadening horizons – students and alumni who responded suggested the support led them to new educational or career pathways that they weren’t previously aware of, including through meeting others via our networking events and programmes. · Improving self-confidence and well-being.
