The versatile and sustainable qualities of leather are helping talented craftspeople access, develop, and sustain careers in artisanal fashion. “It’s a material with endless possibilities and it’s incredibly rewarding to work with something so tangible and responsive. I love how it adapts to every touch and cut, and working with it feels like a dialogue.” Read the story: https://lnkd.in/eMqqFjDM Featuring Martina Spetlova; Rosa Fior and Steve Moss 🖋️ Tom Bottomley 📷 Paul Read

Looking forward to working with Abbey England Ltd. on Phase 2 of the Surplus Leather Project - supporting a thriving and connected UK leather industry by distributing surplus leather to students on leather related courses. Learn more about the project and our education and tannery partners here: https://lnkd.in/eTRkbxKc
We are delighted to launch Phase 2 of The Leathersellers Surplus Leather Project. 16 parcels packed with free leather are being distributed to six universities and colleges across the UK. This fantastic scheme enables students to access a range of locally produced leather with different finishes and colours for their projects while encouraging the use of a sustainable by-product, fostering an understanding of the material, and allowing the development of key leatherworking skills among the next generation of designers and leatherworkers. The surprising impact of Sixth Form Awards and how they are making a crucial, sometimes life-changing, difference to students. “Getting the Sixth Form Award [from the Leathersellers' Foundation] changed my life completely,” says Leyla Reveillon-Kessali, alumna of the Leathersellers' Federation of Schools and University of Cambridge, and now a member of the Leathersellers and governor at Prendergast School. “First, it was wonderful that people noticed my hard work. It helped me to cope and to look to the future whenever I was tempted to give up. Winning the award was also one of the factors that influenced my decision to go to university, seeing the interest the Leathersellers had in my academic journey and how many people were invested in my potential.” Read the story: https://lnkd.in/eWUaxNsh 🖋️ Fiona Thompson Writer 📷 Paul Read

The Leathersellers' targets to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Nicholas Tusting, Master (Chair) of the Leathersellers said: “Our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative speaks to the importance of our roles as stewards. From our membership to our historical and cultural assets there is an expectation that we must pass on a better organisation – an ambition we have endeavoured to achieve from our home in the City of London for 600 years. Our net-zero targets recognise that environmental security is a significant factor in the accomplishment of our long-term objectives and helps us plan, sustainably, for the future.” Read more about our targets and what steps we have already taken to reduce our carbon emissions: https://lnkd.in/gEpM9zhC #netzero #cityoflondon

Earth-minded: How UK leather pioneers are setting global standards in sustainability Leather remains prevalent in our everyday lives; a material tradition, rooted in an understanding of nature and natural processes that humanity has kept up for thousands of years. This legacy is now informing a modern discourse, with different challenges and opportunities arising as part of the climate crisis. As resources like leather are put under the microscope, its place as a sustainable material is being championed by UK companies, brands, and individuals for the benefit of a global industry.
