Speaking recently at the London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium careers conference, one of the most frequent questions I got asked about how to navigate the path from neuroscience to data science is ‘’Where do I start?’’ A deceptively simple question without a straightforward answer. Tasked with setting up the dev environment on my new local machine this week (something that I haven’t done in a while), this question kept coming back into my mind. I realised how a transition from one domain of expertise to another is not a point transition but a series of starts, even if you have started them many times before. To help with those looking where to start, I thought I would make at least one thing easier. Recently, I had the privilege to present my PhD research at the Collaborative Research Gala, which was wonderfully hosted by the London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium at County Hall, London. This event was a great opportunity to share my work and also to celebrate collaboration, innovation, and progress. It was inspiring to see the incredible strides my peers and I have made as we approach the final year of our projects. A big thank you to the LIDo team for organizing such a memorable event and to everyone who attended for making it such a rewarding experience! Antimalarials stop symptoms, but do they also block onward transmission? Thrilled that our latest study reporting on a clinical trial in Mali to assess the transmission blocking efficacy of ACT and TACT, with and without a single low-dose of primaquine, is now published in Lancet Microbe. Shoutout to the great team at MRTC in Mali!

As the year draws to a close, so has my time as an intern with the Opportunity Assessment Group (OAG) at LifeArc. From assessing promising therapeutics and diagnostics to collaborating on more bespoke diligence projects across each of LifeArc’s Translational Challenges with a talented and incredibly supportive team, this role pushed me to think critically to be able to deliver actionable insights. What stood out most during my internship was the collaborative environment, emphasising the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in driving translational science forward to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and real-world impact. Thank you to the OAG team and LifeArc for this incredible opportunity to grow and contribute. 

This post reminded me of everything that was highlighted at the LIDo Bioindustry day just over a week ago, hosted and arranged by Renos Savva, the transferable skills gained throughout the process of researching and managing our own projects in the PhD are not to be underestimated. With the numerous career options shared by the speakers that day, it is a good idea to reflect on the skills we have gained and can evidence which can be applied in areas such as strategy consultancy (Joanna Myślińska, Jordan Lee) scientific writing (Sonia Norris), data science (Dr Assel Kashkenbayeva) IP & Patent Law (Sophie Knott, PhD) healthcare data management (Heather Fitzke) as well as entrepreneurship! Thanks to London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium for opening our eyes to these opportunities beyond the traditional trajectory following a PhD and thanks to all the speakers who emphasised the essential soft skills they gained in their PhD experience and how they use them now.
