Yields on 30-year UK government bonds are now at levels not seen for more than 25 years – which means that their prices have fallen as sceptical investors sell them. At the same time, the pound has fallen against the dollar. What’s going on? Morningstar has a good explainer on what’s driving this trend, and why it could embarrass the still-fresh Labour government. #UKEconomy #BondMarket #Labour #RachelReeves #Gilts

Did Liz Truss crash the economy? Be careful how you answer – you may receive a letter from her lawyers. That’s what happened to Keir Starmer last week – you can find a perceptive analysis of the former PM’s legal move at the link below. All we’ll say is that, as a strategy to prevent people talking about the Truss government’s economic legacy, this is a somewhat unconventional approach. #Law #Politics #Communications #LizTruss #PR

Last week, we had a wild surprise at the LABS office! 🦉✨ Three unique owls visited for a wildlife drawing class, and our Managing Director, Julian Rea, got to test his drawing skills while learning about these incredible creatures. #WildlifeArt #LiminalLife #LABS
🦉 Welcomed a few lively birds into the office this week for a wildlife drawing class, featuring three (very) different, and extremely cool owls! While my drawing skills could certainly do with some work, it was a real treat to see these three up close, and learn more about them as we sketched away. Big thanks to LABS for putting this on, and looking forward to the next one already! #owls

Not long ago, the arrival of Substack and other subscription-based platforms seemed to herald a brand new revenue stream for a wide variety of writers, journalists, and more. But have we now reached ‘peak subscription’? That’s the case this sobering article by Nick Hilton makes, and even if it is depressing to read yet another gloomy piece on the future of media, it makes its case well. #Press #Substack #SubscriptionModel #Email #Media

Every six months, the Bank of England produces an in-depth report on the stability of the financial system, and the risks its experts see in the short to medium term. It’s always interesting reading, but the latest to drop contains some interesting insights amid the wonk-ese. Most striking of all are the concerns expressed about the vulnerability of non-bank financial institutions like hedge funds to "a sudden crystallisation of geopolitical tensions". The whole thing is worth a read, but there are useful summaries in the comments section. #BankOfEngland #Banking #Finance #HedgeFunds #Geopolitics

Since the election of Donald Trump in the US in early November, so-called ‘memecoins’ have surged in value. Half speculative assets and half gags, they are often linked to elements of internet culture that have gone viral – for example, MOO DENG refers to a pygmy hippo in a Thai zoo. Even by the standards of crypto, there has been a lot of market froth, and inexperienced retail investors run the usual risks of losing their shirts. Is this NFTs all over again, or has a turning point been reached? Let us know what you think… #Crypto #MemeCoins #CryptoMarket #DonaldTrump #ElonMusk
