Trafford charity, reducing the effects of poverty on children by reusing clothing and equipment

About us

At Little Green Sock Project, we believe every child deserves the basics to thrive. With a third of children in Greater Manchester living in poverty, and over 11,000 of those in Trafford, the need for support is greater than ever. We are a community-driven charity dedicated to making a difference for families facing financial hardship, ensuring no child goes without essential clothing and items. WHAT WE DO We harness the generosity of our local community to collect and redistribute quality pre-loved children's clothes and essentials. Working closely with referral partners like health visitors, foodbanks, and domestic violence refuges, we ensure that items reach the families who need them most—especially during times of crisis. OUR IMPACT -1,594 bundles distributed, supporting children and families across Greater Manchester. -1,147 children have received essential clothing and items, ensuring they have what they need to thrive. -947 parents have experienced reduced financial pressure, allowing them to focus on other critical needs. -Over £185,000 worth of items distributed, giving new life to perfectly good clothes and making a real difference in our community. -58% of our referrals support single parents, directly helping some of the most vulnerable families. -29% of our referrals are for families fleeing abuse, often with few belongings WHY IT MATTERS We’re passionate about more than just clothing kids—we’re fighting child poverty and promoting sustainability. By reusing and recycling, we’re not just easing financial burdens; we’re also protecting the planet for the next generation. Little Green Socks Project offers a practical, powerful way for our community to come together, help local families, and make a meaningful impact. Join us in making sure no child has to go without. Together, we can support local families, protect our environment, and create a brighter future for all.

  • ‘You just give our stuff, why do you need money?’ Oh I’m so glad you asked! Firstly, the ‘stuff’ you mention are items that are essential for children’s health, safety and development. The stairgates sent out this week will reduce the risk of a child falling down a flight of stairs, preventing life changing injury. The box of sticklebricks (like those pictured below) will ignite a children’s imagination, shape recognition, problem solving, fine motor skills. The cot sent out provides a safer sleeping space for a baby, reducing their risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and provides a space for the child to have a good nights sleep where memories are ‘downloaded’ improving cognitive development. ‘Stuff’ takes up space. Especially kids stuff! And space, costs money. We support over 100 children a month with bundles of ‘stuff’ their family need from warm clothing bundles, footwear, toiletries, toys, to prams, cots, high chairs and more. Our charity is at risk of closure because our ‘space’ is being demolished this year. We haven’t been able to find any low cost spaces, and we urgently need to fund a commercial space. If you can help please donate to help Save Our Baby Bank. As the only baby bank in Trafford, if we go, families in our community won’t have anywhere else to go to get this level of support. L i n k. I n. C o m m e n t s Ps. This sticklebrick cat was proudly made by my 6 yr old, she’s called ‘Ella’ lovingly after her friend at school. She talks to ‘Ella the cat’ every night, telling her stories of what she did at school, and it’s a full time job trying to stop my 3 yr old ripping it apart! (Hence the photo so I can put it back together as was - I’ve done this twice already!) #saveourbabybank #littlegreensock #communityaction #Sustainability

  • 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞! We're pleased to be opening up for donations again, and with almost 50 children already being referred this month, we desperately need to stock up, especially on older children's coats and clothing! Because of your generosity before Christmas we are NOT accepting any more toys, prams/pushchairs/bouncers or baby clothes (unless 9-12m boys). We have good stock of these at the moment and we need to focus on the older children's clothing as per our wish list. Essentially, if its on this Wish List we need it. If its not, we can't currently accept due to space and uncertainty. We'll love you forever if you pre-label your bags with the age/gender of the clothing being donated, and ensure the items are clean and good quality so we can get them to the kids that need them as soon as possible. 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 💚 Little Green Sock Project in Stretford Mall Tuesday-Thurs 10:30-2:30, or the 1st Saturday of the month at the Stretford Socials between 12-2pm. 💚 For large donations or equipment you must book an appointment to drop off via the service yard on the website (L i n k i n c o m m e n t s) 💚 ASDA Trafford Park (for small clothing donations only, no equipment here please or we'll lose the trolley) As always, thank you!!! We couldn't help as many children as we do without your fantastic donations. Please share the wish list with your parent friends! #littlegreensock #urmston #stretford #m33 #trafford #familieshelpingfamilies #communityaction

  • 2024... What a year. Thanks to everyone who has supported us through donating money, time, stuff we've made one hell of an impact. These numbers though, are just numbers, every number has its own powerful story. The single mum struggling to make ends meet for her 4 children after job loss and lifechanging diagnosis earlier this year, supported throughout the year with clothing, footwear, Back to School support and Christmas presents. The working mum who fell pregnant with twins, but had to finish work early due to pregnancy complications, premature arrival of the babies and ongoing health challenges preventing her from returning to work, supported with equipment and clothing throughout the year. The mum and children fleeing war, facing parenthood alone in unfamiliar surroundings after traumatic bereavement of their children's father in their home country, supported with warm clothing and appropriate footwear, toiletries and toys so they were more prepared to deal with our Manchester weather. That's just three of the hundreds of families we have supported in the last 12 months. We really have a fight for survival on our hands as an organisation as we move into 2025, with the planned demolition of our premises, and the need to raise funds for a new space urgently. We're hoping we can find somewhere but need all the help we can get to afford it! The need for our work is growing and we don't want to leave the families of Trafford with no safety net. If you can, please donate and help Save Our Baby Bank! • The power of community action never ceases to amaze me. As I pick up the laptop after a few days to tot up our end of year numbers, I'm just in awe of the impact our small but mighty charity has had, and the lives that have been transformed as a result of it. 💚1220 bundles of support distributed in 2024 💚£126,116 worth of items distributed to children and families facing poverty 💚10 tonnes of donations collected from our community These numbers though, are just numbers, every number has its own powerful story. • 'Relieved, Overwhelmed, Grateful' The three words that first come to parents minds after accessing our support. Relief.... what does that mean though? Relief knowing you have a warm coat for your child to walk to school? Relief knowing your child can participate in sports now they have some trainers? Relief that your child won't wake up on Christmas morning with nothing to open? Relief that your child has clean underwear? Relief that your child has some books and toys to distract them from the trauma they have endured whilst you move into a refuge? Relief that there is support available for anyone in our community falling on hard times. Help us make sure we can keep this vital support available to families who need us. • We are thrilled to announce that AJ Bell Futures Foundation have generously donated £20,000 to our Save Our Baby Bank campaign! Big thanks to Anya Gorton who came out to visit us with the big charity cheque yesterday and saw first hand the impact and scale of our work. From the families accessing the Christmas support, referrers collecting bundles and volunteers working away preparing bundles ready to go out, it was clear how devestating it would be if we were to close. We’re really hoping that this donation will inspire other companies, fundraisers and individuals to get behind us as help save our baby bank. 🫶Thank you so much for your support🫶 #Saveourbabybank #littlegreensock #charitydonation #fundraising #trafford #childpoverty #impact Ged Carter Serena Smallman Lorna Sales CertIOSH AIEMA Lauren Chalmers Rebecca Neves CGMA

  • Festive volunteering, in a Christmas support project, on Christmas Jumper day, can’t get more festive than that! Big shout out to Team Assura plc and Team Freshfields who were our Santa elves this week restocking our Magical Christmas shelves so families could come and choose gifts for their families, and also helped us pack tailored bags for families unable to make it to us in person. The families we support have been so overwhelmed by the support, a couple of thank you messages included in the pics. Thank you all for your time and efforts, you have made the world of difference 🫶 #saveourbabybank #littlegreensock #teamvolunteering #trafford #manchester #CSR #ESG #corporatesocialresponsibility

‘Mum wanted to come to choose the presents for her daughters, because it will be the last time she can.’ Ok, so those of you that know me, know I’m an emotional sausage at the best of times, but this families situation really caught me, and highlighted why that element of choice is so important. You see this mum Maria* has a terminal cancer diagnosis, and has been told she has around a year to live. We offered to do a telephone consult with Maria and send a bundle of gifts if she felt too poorly to come in, but she insisted. She wanted to come. She wanted to choose the gifts as they will have even more meaning this year being her last Christmas with her family. We were able to support Maria with bags and bags of presents for her 4 children, Christmas chocolate, PJ’s, a gift for mum, books and more. We’ll continue to support this family with clothing, footwear, school items and more throughout the year, and beyond, for as long as they need us. But what if we close? Where will they go for support then? We can’t close and leave these families with no support for essentials. Help us Save Our Baby Bank and make sure we save this safety net for families facing the unimaginable. Donate to the campaign, sponsor our new premises, fundraise for us, we need all the help we can get.
