About us

Loamin provide tools to enable the monitoring and measurement of nature-based solutions at scale, unlocking the power of nature in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Leveraging ground truth data, satellite imagery and spatial machine learning, Loamin tools enable highly-efficient soil sampling and continuous monitoring of key indicators at high spatial and temporal resolution. The end result is lower cost and lower risk to those financing and developing nature-based projects projects.

Simplifying NatureTech and Nature Finance || Strategy Consultant @ Monitor Deloitte and Founder @ The NatureTech Memos

We compiled a database of 800+ NatureTech startups 💰 It's the output from 18+ months of research... ... and now it's time to open-source it! We grouped into four categories: 🦅 1. Measure - These innovators are focussed on collecting the data we need to understand Nature's complexity like... - The Eagle which can collect visual data from over 3km away 🐧 2. Aggregate - Collate data from multiple sources and begin to draw insights from it like... - The chinstrap Penguin which aggregates into colonies of up to 1 million individuals 🦌 3. Act - Help corporates take action through finance, or transformation within their supply chains like... - The very (Act)ive Caribou which has the longest terrestrial migration of over 1,200km 🧸 4. Project Developers - The frontliners taking building nature-positive projects, that can be adopted or financed by corporates like... - The Beaver which builds dams up to 850m long, and can even be seen from space 📊 The full database contains: 1. Description 2. Areas of focus 3. Latest Funding / Geography 🔎 Want access? 1. Scroll to the top of this post 2. Click the big blue 'Subscribe to Newsletter' under my face. 3. Fill out the form and you'll find the link to the database in the welcome email. 🗣️ Want to be included in the database? 1. Access the database and click the 'Add Start-Up' button Who do you know that needs to be included? Kudos to: Simas Gradeckas, Jen Stebbing, Oliver Dauert, Eric Wilburn, Joshua Berger and Rachel Ashton Lim for their wisdom! ❗️ P.S. For those who are hearing about my newsletter for the first time - we send deep dives on NatureTech to 3500+ investors and founders each week.

  • What is digital soil mapping? 🌱 We all know that measuring soil carbon accurately is critical if we want to scale regenerative agriculture. But how can we do this in a way that is both cost-effective and scalable? 🧪 Traditionally, measuring soil carbon relies on high density soil sampling. While this can be accurate if done correctly, it is expensive, time consuming, logistically challenging and only provides information for a snapshot in time. 💡 Digital soil mapping is an approach that uses geospatial modelling to quantify correlations between soil indicators (e.g. soil carbon) measured using ground truth soil data and predictor layers, such as satellite imagery, topographic and soil type maps. These correlations are then used to estimate soil properties in areas for which no soil data exists. 🔎 In turn, this makes it possible to obtain robust estimates of soil carbon at scale, from a relatively small number of soil samples, making it far cheaper than relying on soil sampling alone. Furthermore, digital soil maps can be updated, enabling annual change to be estimated. 🛰️ But digital soil mapping has to be done correctly to be useful. Loamin’s science-led team specialise in these models, enabling our customers to have trustworthy data based on the latest advances in geospatial AI and statistics.
