We've been exceptionally over the past 24 hours, with lots of people waiting for an ambulance. We received nearly 7,000 calls in our 999 control room, comparable to a #NewYearsEve. This is partly caused by a huge spike in calls linked to flu, breathing problems, and alcohol consumption. During our busiest periods this winter, extra measures being taken to make sure we can care for as many patients as possible. These steps include giving expert care over the phone, ensuring crews spend the right amount of time with patients on scene, all hospitals aiming to take over patient care within 30 mins of us arriving, and making best use of all other health and social care services. Londoners can help us by saving 999 for life-threatening emergencies.

This week we welcomed The Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP and Amanda Pritchard to the London Ambulance HQ. As the NHS enters a very busy #winter period, we shared our plans for treating more patients over the phone, and how we're working closely with London partners to deliver the best care possible. #TeamLAS has one of the highest rates of ‘hear and treat’ in the country with almost 23% of 999 calls currently being dealt with by a clinician over the phone without delaying an ambulance response. Mental Health Joint Response crews like Bella, Aidan and David provide specialist care for patients in #MentalHealth crisis 💚 As well as doing shifts on fast-response cars, they also work in our Emergency Operations Centre undertaking telephone assessments on patients experiencing a #MentalHealth crisis, and providing over the phone support to ambulance crews across the city with regards to mental health queries. We've got a fantastic opportunity to join the team this month as a Mental Health Specialist Practitioner: https://lnkd.in/ecKXYNd8 #NHSJobs #LondonJobs #HealthCareers

“It’s what I’m best at: caring for people. Looking after my sick brother helps me to empathise with our callers – I always want to do my best for them." #TeamLAS call handler Sumaiya’s older brother is seriously ill with Crohn’s disease, a condition that has left him bed-bound and in constant pain. “It has been really difficult watching my brother suffer. This disease is eating away at him. He has so many physical wounds we have to take care of.” Sadly Sumaiya has had to call 999 several times to get her older brother help. She is his main carer, taking him to his many medical appointments. Her passion for helping people led her to a career as a call handler. She's used her appearance in the latest series of #Ambulance to help raise awareness of #Crohns and the support available for those who live with it. The ultimate Christmas gift 🎁 Patrick's heart stopped beating while playing with his son in front of their #Christmas tree. This year he celebrated by thanking the #TeamLAS crews who helped to save his life at an emotional reunion. After hearing her son ask “Daddy, why are you lying down like that?”, Patrick's wife Tash immediately called 999 and was guided through CPR before crews arrived to restart his heart and convey him to St George's #Hospital for further care. ‘Am I going to make it home tonight?’ Clinical Team Manager Gary was one of the first Paramedics on scene at the 2017 #LondonBridge terror attack. In the latest series of #BBC #Ambulance he recalls the shift that changed his life and career forever. “The number of patients at the scene was overwhelming – so many people needing help and I wanted to do everything I could for them but I had to triage the patients as quickly as possible. “It was hard being unable to spend as much time as I normally would with every person I came across. But in the moment I did what I was trained to do. “Exposure to such a horrific incident is terrible, but it does massively help when it comes to dealing with other incidents and helping colleagues” Full story: https://lnkd.in/ekJFBc8K

On Monday (25.11) our 999 call handlers answered more than 7,000 calls. That's the same level of demand as a typical #NewYearsEve. We attended the most Category 1 patients in #London (life-threatening emergencies) ever at almost 600 people. We have taken extra steps to maximise the number of staff we have responding to #emergencies. Londoners can help us save lives by only using 999 if it’s a life-threatening emergency.
