Using ultrasound to predict premature birth. Only by funding research can we discover the causes of premature birth and develop the tests and treatments to prevent babies being born too early. And this year, we've made significant progress in predicting future premature birth, helping healthcare professionals support those most at risk. Our researchers have previously found a link between those who have a c-section late in labour and future risk of premature birth. They found that if the c-section scar is lower down, it can make the cervix more likely to shorten too early. Now, a new ultrasound scanning technique, developed at our National Centre for Preterm Birth Research, can be used to work out the location of the scar and help to identify those who would benefit from a cervical stitch. This stitch helps to stop the cervix opening, giving women and birthing people the best chance of delivering their baby after 32 weeks. These findings could help save thousands of babies every year.
