  • What is Imposter Syndrome and how do you overcome it? Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern which leads individuals to doubt their accomplishments and fear being exposed as a fraud, creating self-doubt and anxiety. Even when they achieve something remarkable, they often believe it’s due to luck, timing, or external factors—not their own talent or hard work. Why it happens Imposter syndrome doesn’t happen for no reason but it’s caused by several factors: - Perfectionism: If you have extremely high standards for yourself, even small mistakes can trigger feelings of failure. You might feel like anything less than perfect makes you unworthy of success. - Comparison: It’s easy to feel inadequate when comparing yourself to others, especially in the age of social media where everyone’s success seems highlighted and amplified. - Early Childhood Experiences: If you were praised for you results rather than your efforts during your childhood, you might have grown up thinking success is only valid if you achieve perfection without struggle. - New Environments: Whether starting a new job, school, or personal project, being in a new environment can make you feel like you don’t belong or that others are more qualified than you, even if that’s not true. The signs Self-doubt: You often question your abilities and second-guess decisions. Attributing success to external factors: You tell yourself that you only succeed because of external circumstances. Fear of being "found out": you worry other people discover you’re not as competent as they think and judge you as a result. Avoidance of challenges: you may hold yourself back from taking on new opportunities because you feel like you’re not good enough. Do you know how to overcome imposter syndrome? Although imposter syndrome can feel overwhelming, there are practical steps you can take to overcome it. Here are some strategies to combat those feelings of fraudulence: - Recognise Your Thoughts and Reframe Negative Ones Stop to reflect on your thoughts and feelings and instead of thinking, “I don’t belong here,” try telling yourself, “I worked hard to get here, and I deserve to be here.” This will help shift your mindset from self-doubt to self-empowerment. - Talk About It Chances are other people feel the same way, which is why talking about your imposter syndrome can help you see that you’re not alone. - Celebrate Your Successes Acknowledge your achievements and keep a record of your successes to remind yourself of your true worth. - Understand Perfection is Not Required Mistakes are part of the learning process. No one is perfect, and trying to be will only increase feelings of inadequacy. Embrace your imperfections, and give yourself the grace to grow and learn from challenges. Remember: Success is earned, not given. When you feel like a fraud, pause and reflect on how far you’ve come. Trust in your journey and know that you belong exactly where you are. And never forget, you are enough!

  • What Is Imposter Syndrome? Imposter Syndrome isn’t just about feeling insecure, it’s the constant belief that you are not as competent or intelligent as others perceive you to be. Despite your achievements, you attribute your success to luck, timing, or external factors, rather than your own abilities. Some key signs of imposter syndrome include: Perfectionism: Feeling like anything less than perfection will make you feel like a failure. Fear of being ‘called out’: Feeling like others will eventually discover you don’t know as much as they think you do and will call you out on it. Self-doubt: Constantly questioning your abilities, even after receiving positive feedback or results. While imposter syndrome can be paralyzing, it’s not necessarily a reflection of reality. Let us know your thoughts and tell us what you find more challenging when experiencing Imposter Syndrome!
