📷 Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre, Kent Last week, Director Peter Courtney swung by our Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre building and captured this fantastic photograph of the building looking resplendent in the winter sunshine. The use of red brick at ground floor level, in the form of a gently undulating roof form, in combination with the timber cladding of the pitched roof gables reference the historical setting of Edenbridge high street, which has a multitude of traditional pitched roofs and gable forms. The result is an exemplar building that sets itself apart from the traditional view of what an NHS building should look like, and a building that is perfectly settled into its woodland surroundings. I create spaces directly supporting education & community. Architect at LSI Architects.

Friday thoughts - Exploring Denmark’s ‘Skole+’ Initiative.. I am constantly looking to be inspired by innovative approaches to education design and in some of my recent reading I came across an intriguing concept in Denmark’s Skole+ campaign, an exciting initiative attempting to ‘redefine how school environments can foster health, creativity, and community engagement’. For me the Skole+ campaign demonstrates how schools could be reimagined to promote physical activity, both during and beyond school hours, with increased trust and pupil's enthusiasm for the building as key. By integrating thoughtful design with a focus on movement and play, the campaign has managed to inspire children and adults it turns out, to embrace more active lifestyles. A really successful example of this vision in practice was the Søndervang School, one of six pilot projects. The concept of a ‘Motion Trail’ weaves its way through the school’s corridors, transforming them into dynamic spaces that are part exercise track, part creative playground. The Motion Trail features ‘activity hotspots’ strategically placed throughout the school’s main corridors. These hubs are designed to encourage new ways of engaging with exercise, learning, and community, integrating movement into daily routines. What I think makes this successful is the potential for flexibility, and a genuine trust in the users and community. The trail serves both the pupils during school hours and the local community after hours, creating a space that connects people across ages and experiences. This goal is very current with the DfE promoting such a ‘future concept’ at the recent Education Estates this year. The design is carefully designed to reflect a belief in the individuality of each child and to embrace the energy of young people, whether as a group, loud, quiet, calm, or wild, providing environments for everyone to learn and explore. A concentration on the use of sustainable, durable, and aesthetically pleasing materials ensures that this vision is both practical and inspiring, something we can all learn from! To conclude, I wanted to share this because I felt the Skole+ project resonates so closely with our ethos at LSI Architects: ‘designing for human experience, wellbeing, and future resilience’. It challenges us to think about how UK schools might adopt similar concepts to create spaces that inspire physical activity and learning together. Imagine the possibilities, corridors that encourage collaboration, classrooms that encourage movement, and schools that open their doors to vibrant community engagement. FOOD FOR THOUGHT! #architecture #educationdesign #schooldesign #design #movement #community #collaboration #departmentforeducation #DfE

👷 State-of-the art Avant Tecno UK Headquarters completes! Director Rupert Kitchen and Architect Alex Crossley spent an afternoon last week at Suffolk Business Park in Bury St Edmunds as construction work on a state-of-the-art, multi-million-pound company headquarters for Avant Tecno UK has been completed. The new 32,200sqft facility provides AVANT Tecno with a UK head office space alongside a purpose designed agricultural machinery storage warehouse and display area, enabling pre-delivery inspection of machines on-site. Rupert commented: “Avant Tecno is such an exciting client to work with. Their ambition for business quality and growth has inspired an outstanding multi-purpose building that provides a visible statement of ambition for the Avant network in the UK. Equally, it’s been a privilege to work again with The Churchmanor Estates Company plc, SEH French Limited and the wider project team, where genuine collaborative effort and ethos of teamwork has translated into a high-quality commercial building that the whole team is extremely proud of.” The new building is highly sustainable and expected to receive a BREEAM rating of 'Excellent'. #architects #commercial #projectcomplete

Here are some images of the new Paediatrics Theatre Complex at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, following the project’s completion earlier this year. The £8.6M internal refurbishment has transformed underutilised outpatient areas into two new ultra-clean theatres with associated recovery and support accommodation. This new theatre complex is located adjacent to the hospital’s Jenny Lind paediatric ward, dramatically reducing the distance patients are transported for surgery and therefore significantly improving their experience. A particular success of the project was LSI’s close working relationship to Emma Jarvis, the Trust’s Environmental Arts Manager, and the early introduction of integrated artwork to make the new department as child friendly as possible. This artwork features on the walls and ceilings of the complex, with the nurse base also featuring an exciting LED installation. #healthcare #paediatrics #refurbishment

A big well done to our Graphics and Visualisation Manager Derek Jackson on his recent submission into Parametric Architecture’s ‘AI in Practice’ competition! 👏 The international competition was set up to challenge architects and designers to imagine an iconic landmark within the heart of London, combining the city’s history with groundbreaking innovation through the functional use of artificial intelligence. Here is Derek’s concept story, which he developed into a set of images using MidJourney, Grasshopper, and Photoshop’s Generative Fill: “In a quiet part of the city, the standard functions of a typical Georgian church are enhanced by introducing an organic and sinuous new extension, comprising office accommodation, a study centre, new library and conference facilities.” #architecture #visualisation #generativeAI #parametricdesign

  • Come to Sketch Club with us! ✏️ As Architects we often use sketches to communicate our ideas, making it an important skill for us to practice. Not only that, but we also find that taking time outside of the office to sketch is something that really helps to support our wellbeing. A big thank-you to Norwich Castle for hosting our latest session in their newly transformed space. 😊 #architects #sketching #drawing
