Congratulations to Leeds City College Games Development alumni, Bryony Larson, who recently won BTEC Learner of the Year at the TIGA UK Games Education Awards. The awards celebrate outstanding student talent in the video gaming industry. Bryony’s journey showcases the power of technical education in unlocking creative potential. Now studying at the University of Staffordshire, Bryony credits the extracurricular activities she had access to outside of the classroom, plus the dedicated support from her tutors, for inspiring her to apply. She said: “To enter the competition, I needed to submit a video showreel demonstrating my best work from college. I decided to submit projects demonstrating the various skills I learnt, such as 3D modelling, level design, narrative writing and programming. “That said, there were times during my course when I suffered from imposter syndrome, especially as the nature of programming means you face challenges that can take days or weeks to solve. “My course leader, Peter, helped me stay resilient when my confidence and motivation was at rock bottom. I’m now determined to be a games programmer one day”. Read it here: https://bit.ly/4eNOPDO

Leeds City College was proud to sponsor Leeds Creative Skills Festival 2024. Held at the Royal Armouries Museum on Monday 18 November, the event was all about highlighting the array of creative careers that are available – and the skills needed to pursue them. Visitors enjoyed talking to industry experts about the routes into all kinds of different fields, ranging from architecture and IT to video games, music and the performing arts. As part of a group that recognises creativity’s vital role in education, the college was glad to support the day - and students from its Creative Arts department also helped by putting on a dance performance and volunteering. Organised by Leeds City Council’s Employment and Skills Service, the festival, which is free to attend, has now been running for three years.

Figures from Ofqual show that 625,000 adjustments were made to GCSE, AS and A level exams in England this year, highlighting the importance of tailored support for students. For Leeds Sixth Form College student Hannah, ‘simple tweaks’ such as 50% additional time and exams printed on blue paper have been transformative, easing her anxiety and improving her focus. In this insightful BBC News article, Martin Stables, Examination Assessment and Engagement Lead at Leeds City College highlights the planning behind these individual access arrangements - and how all staff have been trained to invigilate exams due to the surge in the number of students requiring extra support. “Last year, the college CEO even stepped in to invigilate an exam,” he says. “It's everyone mucking in." Are free schools and colleges the key to boosting academic achievement, or an expensive red herring? 💭 That is the question at the heart of a new article by Kevin O’Hare, Principal of Keighley College, which was published in Yorkshire Post this week. Kevin explains why the government’s recent decision to re-evaluate a batch of proposed free schools and colleges, through a value-for-money review, is a wise one. Supporters of such initiatives, which were championed by the previous administration, claim they can plug educational gaps and create new opportunities for students in certain areas. When there is no actual demand from them in the locations concerned, however, they are more likely to actually destabilise provision. Kevin writes: "We are confident this review will support our contention that, for most areas, these free schools and colleges would represent an unnecessary and costly distraction. "If so, we hope the Education Secretary will follow the logic of her argument and redirect the funds that are saved from scrapping such projects into our existing post-16 education provision: with a sharp focus on where additional places are required to meet local need."
