This month, we are proud to celebrate our Non-Executive Director Derek Smith, on his remarkable milestone of 40 years with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). From joining as a graduate member in 1984 to becoming a Fellow, the ICE’s highest honour, in 2012, Derek has exemplified dedication and leadership in civil engineering. His career has seen him serve as Northumbria Branch Chair and North East Regional Chair, roles that enabled him to shape policy, build networks, and represent our region at critical industry forums. Today, Derek continues his journey as a mentor, supporting the next generation of engineers as they navigate their own paths to chartership. His legacy and experience are invaluable to our team at Lynas Engineers, and we are honoured to celebrate this achievement with him. Congratulations, Derek, on 40 years of excellence in engineering.

This morning I attended a Preferred Partners event at Middlesbrough FC Riverside Stadium with William Osborne and Joe Scott. Since joining Lynas Engineers last December, I was aware of the initative but hadn't realised the purpose or value that had been created before today. We're working with some incredible organisations and I'm grateful to have been invited along to see for myself and to hear the positive feedback shared by business leaders in the area. The recurring event was setup three years ago and is hosted by Lynas Engineers & Just Williams - BCorp with support from Middlesbrough FC Foundation. Preferred Partners has brought together local businesses in the construction industry to share expertise and business opportunites in the region.

Our projects are unique at Lynas Engineers, and our recent surface water and foul drainage system work with Darlington Borough Council is a prime example of that. Ingenium Parc in Darlington falls on a site that runs adjacent to a local nature reserve, so it was an exciting challenge to carry out our design, alongside these sustainability conditions. Meet Ben Ratcliffe, our Assistant Engineer here at Lynas. Ben has been with us since 2023, and in that time, he has completed a degree in Civil Engineering at Teesside University, receiving first class honours and receiving of the prestigious ICE & CIHT Transporter Bridge Award.
