We are delighted to announce the line-up of expert panellists who will be joining us at the upcoming ROMULUS launch event with City of London Corporation and UPCYCLEA to talk more about this groundbreaking initiative, designed to create public-private partnerships to stimulate a circular economy market in the capital. Opening the event will be: Shravan Joshi MBE - Chairman of the Planning & Transportation Committee & Member of the Policy and Resources Committee Shravan started his career in investment banking but moved to the energy sector in 1999. He specialised in trade structuring and supply chain contracts into Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Far East and North America and has worked with several new energy technology companies. He currently advises firms on policy, governance and commercialisation of new innovations and solutions.   Taking centre stage will be:   Mete Coban MBE - Deputy Mayor of London for Energy and Environment Deputy Mayor since July 2024, Mete oversees the Mayor’s world-leading climate action plan for the capital. Previously Councillor and Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment, and Transport in the London Borough of Hackney, Mete is best known for pioneering Hackney’s Community Energy Fund and delivering a £61 million Green New Deal to tackle the climate crisis.    María Fernández Cachafeiro - Head of Sustainability, Multiplex UK   With over 15 years’ experience within the built environment sector, Maria brings a wealth of knowledge and key insights on environmental and social sustainability from her involvement in delivering Multiplex’s 2023 strategies on decarbonisation and social equity.   Justin Sayer - Associate Director, Eric Parry Architects Justin brings a brilliant awareness and sensitivity around the impact of construction on the environment, and is part of EPA’s practice leadership group guiding the office in its response to the challenges caused by climate change.    Eric Allodi - Co-Founder, UPCYCLEA Eric is passionate about the decarbonisation and circular management of real estate assets – having recently used his specialist skills in AI to create Upcyclea, a future-focused software designed to maximise reuse and promote circular buildings.   Nils Rage - Head of ESG, Stanhope PLC Nils has a comprehensive understanding on the best ways to implement sustainability across all aspects of project development (from initial design to asset management and future investments) and leads Stanhope’s ESG strategy.   There’s still time to register to join the launch event on Monday 18th of November at the NLA London Centre. 🚀 Helping the City of London reach net zero! 🚀 Maconda is pleased to announce the launch of ROMULUS. In partnership with City of London Corporation and together with UPCYCLEA, this groundbreaking initiative has been designed to create public-private partnerships to stimulate a circular economy market in the UK's capital. Speaking about the initiative's aim to establish best practice and provide evidence for targeted policy interventions, Chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transportation Committee, Shravan Joshi MBE, says that: "initiatives like Romulus are vital in signalling to investors that we are committed to meeting our Net Zero goals, through sustainable growth in construction within the City.” The initial pilot is supported by City of London Corporation, making them the first local authority to have direct access to circular insights from live building projects, working closely with major industry partners. Together, a community of key industry stakeholders will anchor the initiative to drive the increased use of reclaimed materials and trace material flows using a common data template in the form of material passports. The largest source of carbon emissions in the Square Mile is commercial and industrial buildings (71%) and the Romulus initiative is expected to significantly aid the City of London to reach net zero by 2040! 🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 As the residential sector grapples with the question of delivering low-impact housing, Maconda have been working with the UK’s largest social housing landlord Clarion Housing Group to identify how a circular model could be embedded throughout development. We are completing our first phase of the works with a circular economy audit of Marsh Court - a key pioneer project as part of Clarion’s flagship £1billion regeneration of High Path in the London Borough of Merton. All on-site materials were identified, passported and digitized into an easily accessible format using UPCYCLEA. We held detailed workshops with internal Clarion teams, as well as local authorities, design consultants and other key stakeholders to uncover new opportunities for reuse and repurposing within the local supply chain. Our objective is to minimise waste as well as identify areas that could lead to financial gains through material reuse, while at the same time encouraging cost savings and new sources of value creation! Collaborating with Clarion and our research partners at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, we will soon present our findings in a case study. Working with award-winning practice PLP Architecture as part of their new office space, we’re aiming to improve the circular economy for offices by: ✔️ Leveraging material passports to record baseline embodied carbon ✔️ Digitally sharing all passport information to facilitate reuse ✔️ Tracing and recording the value recovered the from sale of reclaimed products. ✔️ Substantially reducing the total carbon impact of the fit out Throughout this project, we’re going to highlight not only the environmental advantages of the circular model but also the financial benefits.
