About us

We are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, a large acute hospital trust in the south east of England. We provide a full range of general hospital services and some aspects of specialist and complex care to around 600,000 people living in west Kent and East Sussex. We have a team of over 8,000 full and part-time staff, and also provide specialist cancer services to around 2 million people across Kent and East Sussex via the Kent Oncology Centre. Our core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs. We operate from three main clinical sites: Fordcombe Hospital, Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury, which provides wholly single bed en-suite accommodation for inpatients. Against a backdrop of increasing demand for services, the dedication and innovation of colleagues has enabled us to become one of the top performing trusts in the country. Regularly in the top five in England for emergency department performance, we rapidly reduced the number of long patients waiting for elective surgery and have delivered the national cancer standard for almost five years. While improving performance and ensuring our patients receive high quality timely care we have listened to colleagues and worked hard to both support and grow our workforce. Staff feedback in the national NHS Staff Survey has ranked us as one of the top ten hospital trusts in the country – and the second best in the south east – to work for.

  • We have over 250 incredible volunteers and this year they gave an astonishing 40,000 hours of their time! From SWAN volunteers who support patients at the end of life to Pets As Therapy dogs and their owners, and our League of Friends volunteers, they can be found across the Trust making a difference to people's lives every day. Members of our Executive team - and our fabulous Voluntary Services team - joined them for Christmas lunch at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells hospitals to say thank you and to present long service awards, including to two people who have volunteered for 25 years, and three who have completed 30 years of service! Anne-Marie Stevens-Swain, Voluntary Services Manager, said: “I have the pleasure of leading our wonderful team of volunteers, and it’s important we recognise the outstanding contribution they make...Our volunteers demonstrate a real commitment to our organisation, and I look forward to continuing to work with them in the new year.” Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for everything you have done to support us this year! 💙

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust had the chance to show off the #Teletracking Care Coordination Centre (CCC) https://lnkd.in/gDuyjhjJ when Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves MP and Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones MP came by for a tour. The CCC uses real time data to constantly monitor the Trust’s 700 beds to improve the movement of patients through its hospitals. It has reduced the amount of time a bed is empty, making sure patients arriving by ambulance are quickly moved into our emergency departments. This ensures patients get the right care, in the right place at the right time, helping to minimise discharge delays and getting patients home or to their next place of care as quickly as possible. #DigitalHealth #Interoperability #NHS #HealthTech

  • Maidstone Hospital hosted the first Kent and Medway Breast Study Day last month, with over 100 delegates gathering for presentations and discussions on practice development, innovation, breast imaging and national requirements for the NHS breast screening service. Presenters included Consultant Radiographer, Ivy Okereke who explored artificial intelligence developments in breast radiology, and Innovation Manager, Hayley Beresford who discussed opportunities for attendees to be involved in research and innovation. The event also included a poster presentation, including studies such as the Breast Radiology team’s research into gender inequality in breast radiology services, which was recognised at this year's Healthwatch Awards. Superintendent Radiographer, Sally Harper said the day: “...was a resounding success...We’ve collected extremely positive feedback from the event, and look forward to welcoming colleagues again in the future to further develop our practice.”

  • The work of teams at ‘one of the top performing trusts in the country’ was praised by Rachel Reeves MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer during a visit to Maidstone Hospital today. She heard about innovative ways of working which enable us to deliver some of the fastest access to patient care in the country. Her visit included the new Kent and Medway Orthopaedic Centre, which has three state-of-the-art operating theatres and is helping patients across Kent and Medway who need planned surgery on bones, joints and muscles. She also visited the Care Coordination Centre which uses real time data to constantly monitor the Trust’s 700 beds. It has reduced the amount of time a bed is empty, making sure patients arriving by ambulance are quickly moved into our emergency departments. Against a backdrop of increasing demand we continue to be one of the top-performing trusts in the country. We were the first trust in England to have no long waiting patients, are regularly in the top five for emergency department performance, and have delivered the national cancer standard each month for five years. • Our expert radiotherapy team at Kent and Canterbury Hospital have cared for their first patient with a type of high-dose radiation to target lung cancer and provide even quicker treatment times. Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) delivers high doses of radiation in fewer treatments compared with conventional radiotherapy techniques, precisely locating tumours while protecting surrounding healthy tissues. SABR means shorter treatment courses and fewer side effects, and has been provided at Maidstone Hospital since 2017. Expanding the service to Canterbury means patients in east Kent can now be treated much closer to home. The Kent Oncology Centre - which delivers radiotherapy at both Maidstone and Kent & Canterbury hospitals - is one of the country's largest cancer centres and is achieving all three national cancer standards, making our cancer services one of the best performing in the country. Well done to the team for providing this fantastic new service to our patients! 👏
