Hats off to the ASA. First HSBC now Lloyds pulled up for greenwashing. But we believe this is the tip of the greenwash iceberg from our largest high street banks. Since the Paris Climate Agreement, collectively Barclays, HSBC, Santander, NatWest and Lloyds have funnelled over $500 billion to fossil fuels. These banks all set out net zero goals, talk of their efforts to align to 1.5 degrees, and have documentation and statements on climate – with associated imagery. However, according to Banking on Climate Chaos, all five financed companies expanding fossil fuels in 2023. We therefore believe that customers risk being misled by banks’ information, imagery, and claims on climate change - whilst we see climate disasters increasing in frequency and ferocity, such as recently in Valencia. We have written to the FCA asking it to investigate our largest high street banks for greenwashing, but so far they have refused. We call again on the FCA to show that it means business in implementing its anti-greenwash rule which came in to force six months ago, to protect customers.
