Happy new year! Hope everyone had a great break. The third and final content summary for our 4th webinar of 2024 covers the barriers preventing the NHS from fully embracing digital solutions. The panel shared their thoughts on the future of digital healthcare. One key challenge mentioned was risk. Introducing new technologies and methods in healthcare carries significant risks, as mistakes can have serious consequences for patients. Adopting new ways of working requires careful consideration of safety and evaluation which can make NHS staff reluctant to change their traditional way of doing things. Another major factor preventing the NHS from implementing technology is cost. There are always questions around funding and commissioning, with individual trusts often lacking the expertise to determine what digital solutions they should adopt. Digital companies must pitch to a large number of decision-making bodies, making it difficult to gain widespread adoption. In order to get on board with digital, staff need to have a strong incentive. Currently one of the main incentives is cost effectiveness, with staff more inclined to invest in technology that promises to reduce expenses. However, the panel agreed that this cost-first mindset can hinder progress. Even if a product has the potential to benefit patients, staff may hesitate to adopt it if it requires significant financial investment. It is evident that a shift in mindset is needed to prioritise patient outcomes and long-term value over immediate cost savings. Despite these barriers, the discussion ended on an optimistic note. Advances in technology have made developing digital solutions faster, cheaper, and easier than ever before. As costs continue to decrease, the path to adoption will become more accessible, reducing the need for substantial funding from entrepreneurs and NHS organisations alike. The panel emphasised that while the tools and capabilities to drive change are already in place, we now need a shift in mindset in healthcare, that embraces innovation and the long-term benefits of digital transformation. The second of our content summaries from Maldaba's 4th and final webinar of the year, covers the panel's discussion on common myths surrounding the role of digital in enabling quality services. One common misconception is that certain groups of patients—such as elderly individuals or people with a learning disability—are unable or unwilling to use technology. Glenda shared an example from a workshop she held with young adults with a learning disability. The patients were using an Alexa to find out football scores. One patient’s communication issues meant he was unable to pronounce “Alexa” so therefore the device wasn’t able to respond, resulting in frustration and anxiety for the user. To solve this, a programmer at the workshop created colour-coded buttons as an alternative to voice commands. This is an example of how co-design with users is essential when developing digital solutions. Developers must understand individual needs in order to improve people’s experience of technology and ultimately improve their quality of life. It is important not to assume that patients aren’t able to use technology, but to instead design technology in a way that is accessible to users. Another common myth discussed by the panellists, is that it’s too difficult to implement technology into the NHS. Many staff members feel that developing digital solutions to produce quality service is unachievable due to factors such as cost, usability and the complexity of the issues within healthcare. Tom highlighted the importance of shifting this mindset, emphasising the rapid growth technology is currently undergoing. Over recent years, technology has become increasingly advanced and there is a whole new skillset and capability which can be implemented into healthcare. To overcome doubt from NHS Staff, developers and technology teams must engage closely with healthcare workers, and really understand what co-design and co-production look like in practice. One approach discussed was to remove the word “digital” from “digital innovation”. We must take a holistic view for impactful change, focusing first on understanding the issues at hand before determining how technology can play a role. By prioritising the problem itself rather than starting with the assumption that technology is the solution, healthcare teams can make more impactful and meaningful changes. 🌟 Maldaba Webinar Series Finale 🌟 Maldaba hosted its fourth and final webinar of 2024, Digital as an Enabler of Quality Service, on 3rd December. Once again, thanks to our panellists Henry Potts Tom Stocker CHCIO Glenda Cook Dr. James Somauroo Lorenzo Gordon for joining us. The discussion explored how digital innovation can drive quality outcomes for both patients and staff. The panellists shared their perspectives on what "quality service" means in healthcare, discussed common myths surrounding digital transformation, and spoke about some of the barriers currently preventing digital transformation being used in healthcare. The webinar began with a discussion on what quality service means in digital health. The panellists agreed that digital implementation must strike a balance between patient outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and operational efficiency. The discussion focused on the fact that often more emphasis is placed on cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency and that there should be more of a focus on the experience of the patient. Empathy for users is a key factor in designing technology that not only supports service delivery but also improves patients' overall quality of life. There are a number of factors that play a role in ultimately improving patient outcomes. One of the factors discussed was the care teams experience using technology. When care teams have a positive experience with digital tools, such as intuitive workflows, strong communication within teams, and access to complete and reliable data, they are better positioned to deliver high-quality care to patients. Achieving quality service and outcomes for patients, often begins with improving processes for a number of other people. There needs to be changes in the way workflow is designed and the way people interact with one-another. The use of technology in healthcare shouldn’t be about replacing people, but instead should be used as a tool to improve how people work to augment or change services in order to bring about the change we want to see and making patient's lives better. ‘A number of factors mean intermediate care services are at risk of being overlooked in national policy development – including a modest funding allocation, fragmented data and a highly disparate portfolio of services, often involving a wide range of providers.’ The configurability of Pathways to Care allows health and care systems to continue to work in way that meets their local populations needs, while streamlining data and creating a space for all services to connect in a single place.

People with a learning disability may have more difficulty than others in identifying health problems and getting treatment for them. Furthermore, learning disabled patients are more likely to have physical health problems such as epilepsy and diabetes, and as a result have a shorter life expectancy than the general population. Annual Health Checks can help to reduce these health inequalities. However, they are not currently being offered to all learning disabled patients, and according to NICE less than 50% of young people receive them. https://lnkd.in/eJxd3DCj Maldaba's Annual Health Checks solution aims to increase uptake and quality of health checks for learning disabled patients by streamlining the process for primary care staff and offering features such as pre-appointment questionnaires and health action plans to patients.
