Who's who...meet notable and influential people in passive fire protection and associated industries. Let's share the knowledge! Today, Nicola John Managing Director of FDM-Training & Development, a state-of-the-art facility in Bury for Fire Door training, inspections and maintenance. What does your role entail? "As MD of a new and rapidly developing business, my role is very varied. I report to the wider group CEO and have autonomy to develop FDM as a new business.  We set up as a business for industry by industry and my role is very interesting. I speak to suppliers, landlords, Local authorities, fire brigades and industry professionals on a daily basis. It is my job to work on the development and long-term plans of the business inline with Industry and government changes.   We are very focused on supporting anyone who comes into contact with a fire door from architects and specifiers through to installers/maintainers and inspectors from a variety of business sectors from Tier one contractors down to the independent traders. I am also heavily involved in the development of courses, qualifications and SKEB for our customers and driving up the levels of training resources that is available in our sector to become industry leaders in training and development as we navigate the new landscape of building a safer future." What is your background in the industry? "I have worked in a senior role in both construction and door manufacture for most of my career with my main client based consisting of social housing landlords. I spent 7 years as a management trainer and NVQ assessor for a private training provider in the 1990’s early 2000’s. Until recently I was running my own business consultancy company which serviced not only our window and door industry but was advising other types of new and existing companies on business planning, training/development, and compliance. My current role is a perfect combination of all my previous roles, and I am enjoying working within our sector to raise standards and challenge the status quo." Tell us a little-known detail about you, it can be a hobby or voluntary role outside of your job: "I am the chair for South and West Wales Institute of Directors (IoD) and the founder of a female business group called 4Ivy, both of which I find really rewarding to see new and existing businesses flourish and to be able to contribute in a small way to their success. My hobbies however include travelling, and my mid-life crisis has seen me trek the Inca trail for 5 days sleeping under the stars and enter at sunrise through the golden gate into Machu Picchu. Trek the Amazon Jungle for several days looking for species of insects, birds and monkeys and also travel off grid in some obscure parts of the globe as a posh backpacker 😉. I have a bucket list of travels much longer than the one I have completed to date and am always looking for recommendations from friends and colleagues …any suggestions are welcome 😊"
