It was an honor to share insights at IPEM 2025 with Sasha Batica, CFA, Pierre Stadler, and Martina Sanow, discussing the development potential of thematic private asset funds in wealth channels. Key takeaways: 1. At Mirova, our private equity investment strategies revolve around a thematic approach. - Our environmental strategy targets growth-stage solution providers in renewable energy, smart cities, agtech, circular economy, and natural resources. - Our tech for good strategy focuses on health, well being, new consumption habits, and education at all life stages. 2. Identifying companies in these sectors with proven technology, commercial traction, and scalability potential demands expertise and focus. 3. Despite short-term uncertainties and political instability, these solution providers address critical long-term needs like planetary boundaries and associated impacts, such as droughts, pollution and soil erosion. This is why the value creation potential is robust. 4. This approach offers strong financial performance potential while contributing to environmental and social goals, aligning with SDGs. Individual investors appreciate the thematic focus and meaningful impact of their investments. 5. Notably, individual investors make up 30% of our asset base in thematic private equity, showcasing substantial market interest.

Great post by Farid highlighting the absence of UK advisers in private markets. I speak with dozens of financial advisers and wealth managers about this very topic and find the reasons fascinating. Some of the niche structural problems in the UK preventing advisers stem from... ...over-regulation: the FCA categorises private funds as high risk Non-Mainstream Pooled Investments (NMPI), which lowers the risk tolerance for many regulated financial services businesses, like wealth managers and personal pension (SIPP) administrators. Fundamentally, is a diversified portfolio of early stage businesses managed by an established venture capital fund really riskier than a single stock traded on the AIM? Or is a UK domiciled closed-ended senior secured private credit fund really riskier than an open-ended hedge fund domiciled in the Cayman investing in esoteric financial instruments? PI Insurance: largely stemming from the above, many insurers either won't include private assets within the scope of permitted advice for financial advisers, or they price the coverage so high that it is uneconomical for financial advisers to pay for coverage. Financial incentivises - or lack of: if the organisation you work for says you can't advise on this stuff and your PI Insurance coverage wont extend to private markets, how can advisers book private assets and earn fees on them? As we were talking with Chris Tottman of Notion Capital yesterday, these kind of obstacles are hindering UK growth and only serve to widen long term wealth inequality. Advisers want in, their clients do too, so something has to give there. Will politicians act and pressure the regulators for change?

Private markets hold immense potential, yet they remain significantly underutilised in the UK. While private markets represent 15% of client assets globally, in the UK, they account for a mere 2%. This gap is an opportunity waiting to be seized. According to a recent NextWealth survey, several challenges keep advisers hesitant: 👉 Regulatory complexities create #uncertainty 👉 Concerns about #illiquidity make advisers cautious 👉 Valuation complexities add layers of perceived risk 👉 Accessibility barriers limit client engagement Even more striking, two-thirds of advisers never discuss private markets with their clients! The conversations that do happen tend to focus on accumulation, overlooking the potential of private markets as a diversification and growth tool across various strategies. We are at Mara, believe these barriers are not insurmountable. With the right structures in place, private markets can be simplified, accessible, and aligned with the needs of advisers and their clients. Our mission is to bridge this gap. We specialise in bespoke SPVs and feeder fund structures, enabling fund managers and advisers to access private markets efficiently, reduce complexity, and engage a broader range of investors. Through partnerships with different sponsors, we’re making private markets accessible in ways that weren’t possible before. The UK has a tremendous opportunity to embrace private markets as a mainstream asset class. By simplifying access and overcoming these long-standing challenges, we can unlock significant value for both investors and advisers. • Our CEO, shared some insights on how private equity firms can expand into the private wealth space through feeder #SPVs, enabling access for a wider network of investors. It’s an exciting opportunity for mid-market funds to grow with a scalable, efficient structure. Expanding access to private markets has become more crucial than ever as demand from private wealth investors grows. Many mid-market funds face resource constraints that limit their ability to tap into this space effectively. we’re here to bridge that gap 🚀 #PrivateWealth #PrivateMarkets #SPVs

Private wealth hires for large private equity firms are growing and is well highlighted by the FinancialNews article below, commenting on hires by Ares Management Corporation, Permira and Hg. Many mid-market funds do not have the resources to charge into the private wealth space, so feeder structures managed by Mara are perfect for firms to build the foundations of a private wealth distribution strategy, where the typical "friends and family" allocation is expanded to include portfolio executives, advisers, and non-director level staff. We have seen these pools grow quickly organically through referrals, so funds should not overlook their immediate networks for fundraising! #privatewealth #privatemarkets #SPVs

The world of private equity is shifting. Barron’s recent deep dive estimates that private equity assets could reach $12 trillion by 2028, and a big part of that growth? It’s coming from high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) and family offices stepping up their interest in private markets. In the past, this asset class was almost exclusively dominated by institutions, pension funds, endowments, and the like. But as volatility in public markets rises, more HNWIs are exploring alternatives for diversification, steady returns, and frankly, something they feel they have more control over. Private equity has this appeal, it offers long-term value creation that doesn’t hinge on the daily swings of stock prices. What’s exciting is how private wealth investors are no longer held back by the barriers that once defined private equity. New structures and platforms (the likes of which we’re heavily involved in at Mara) have made it simpler and more tax-efficient for HNWIs to access these investments. Friends and family pools, for example, are becoming much more than just personal networks—they’re evolving into structured, compliant pathways that offer access to top-tier private equity funds. From where I sit, this shift is also driven by a generational change. Today’s investors are looking for more than returns; they want flexibility, transparency, and efficiency in how they invest. Traditional private equity structures don’t always align with those expectations. That’s where more tailored solutions—like the SPVs and feeder structures we focus on—come in. They’re designed not just to simplify the investment process but also to offer a direct line into these opportunities, without the administrative burdens typically associated with large fund entry requirements. It’s interesting to consider: will this #retailisation of private equity fundamentally change the sector? Will it push private equity firms to rethink how they engage with investors beyond the institutions they’re used to? For me, it’s an exciting trend to watch—and to be a part of. https://lnkd.in/eJ5UtTdP #PrivateEquity #AlternativeInvestments #PrivateWealth #InvestmentEvolution #PrivateMarkets #MaraInvest

This week, I had the pleasure of attending the Private Markets European COO Summit 2024 at Sopwell House and engaging in some fantastic discussions on the future of private markets. A special thanks to Charles Hopkinson-Woolley FCISI, who chaired the summit with such precision and insight. One standout session for me was the panel on Retailisation of Private Markets, sponsored by BNY Mellon, where Brian McMahon shared his views on the growing role of private wealth and individual savings accounts in capital raising. The discussion highlighted how the expansion into retail investors' involvement is reshaping private markets and the opportunities this presents for fund managers. we're excited about this shift and the role our alternative solutions can play in simplifying access to private markets for family offices and high-net-worth individuals. As #Retailisation continues to gain momentum, we're well-positioned to support this transformation. I also attended the insightful session with Henry Tapper, where he shared his 40 years of experience with pension funds and private market investments—a truly deep dive into long-term strategies. The summit featured an excellent set of speakers, including Thomas Lack discussing The state of fundraising, which was particularly relevant as we witness changes in capital raising across the board. Huge thanks to With Intelligence for organizing such a valuable summit, and I look forward to the one! Happy Friday everyone! #PrivateMarkets #Retailisation #MaraInvest #WealthManagement #PrivateMarketsEuropeanCOOSummit 2024

  • 2024 has been one of the toughest years for first-time #VC funds, and the numbers make that pretty clear. Fundraising is slowing, capital is harder to come by, and the road ahead feels steep. But here’s what’s inspiring: emerging managers today are showing more grit, focus, and clarity than ever. They’re not just launching funds—they’re doing it with purpose, knowing exactly which gaps they want to fill and what impact they want to make. We’ve had the privilege of supporting some of these determined #GPs by creating bespoke #SPVs and alternative structures that can enable emerging managers get to market quicker for far cheaper than the traditional LP/GP fund structure. It’s a tough environment, but if you’re one of those managers pushing through, keep going. The journey is hard, but the impact you’re making will be worth it. If you ever need a partner to navigate this, we’re here to help 👊 #venturecapital #emergingmanagers #fundraising
