🗨️📢 The assisted dying bill debate has raised much needed awareness today about the need for better palliative and end of life care. At this stage, the law on assisted dying has not changed and the bill will go through many more months of consideration. But while the conversation continues, too many people are dying in unnecessary pain and often alone, because the current system is failing them. Marie Curie remains neutral on the matter of assisted dying, but what we are absolutely not neutral on is the need to urgently fix end of life care. ❌ Visit: https://lnkd.in/eekHnu2W to read more.

Healthcare Assistant Marlene has been at Marie Curie for seven years and has worked over four Christmases. One Christmas she worked throughout the night from 10pm until 7am, sleeping during Christmas Day, heading for Christmas supper at her brother’s house, where she had roast turkey with all the trimmings before she headed out at 9pm to go to work with a mince pie and some Christmas pudding! “I work during Christmas because someone in the community will always need my care at the end of their life, and because everyone deserves to have a good end of life experience." Help us be there for more people so that no one has to spend their last Christmas in pain and alone: https://lnkd.in/eMyPB3SW

With the Assisted Dying Bill debate taking place tomorrow, now is the time to highlight the issues facing people at the end of life and the ways we plan to tackle it at large. Marie Curie firmly maintains a neutral position on the matter of assisted dying; we do not campaign for or against a change in the law. ❌📢 However, what we're absolutely not neutral on is the urgent need to improve end of life care and financial support for people at the end of life. 📣💬 There's an important, ongoing debate about whether or not assisted dying should be legalised in the UK. The debate is highly emotional, complex and deeply personal. But standing apart from this debate is the fact that far too many people currently miss out on the care and support they need towards the end of their life. Right now, services and staff are stretched to their limits, and carers and families often don't know where to turn for help. Marie Curie takes a neutral position on whether assisted dying should be legalised, but we're far from neutral on the critical need to improve palliative care so that no one suffers because they're unable to get the care they need. 💭 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/er97wCzY

In our three year partnership with Morrisons, we're hoping to... 🏥 Enhance Marie Curie Hospices, to create a legacy of hospices fit for the future. 🏡 Provide more nurses to deliver expert hospice care at home, so people can stay surrounded by their loved ones and community. 📷 Help make moments that matter, so people at the end of life can create precious memories with loved ones. We want to help families get the best end of life care possible, whatever the illness, wherever they are.

During Children's Grief Awareness Week, we're delighted to share that since May 2024 Marie Curie has partnered with Winston's Wish to co-design information for adults supporting children and young people who’re affected by terminal illness. We wanted to partner with Winston’s Wish and their Youth Team to better understand what helps children and young people when someone is ill, and how to best support them when they’re bereaved. The collaboration has given us the opportunity to work together with children and young people who’ve been bereaved by terminal illness. We’re working with Winston's Wish to update our information and provide signposting to their fantastic bereavement support for children and young people. Thank you, Winston's Wish. 👏

Did you know loss and bereavement is not currently part of initial teacher training, and is not an area of requirement for newly qualified teachers? This #ChildrensGriefAwarenessWeek we want to highlight the important work of our Compassionate Schools Community programme, which for the last 3 years has been tackling issues in grief and bereavement education and support in schools by: 1️⃣ Strengthening school-based loss and bereavement information and support for pupils. 2️⃣ Undertaking research to increase awareness of the need to better support children and young people and the need for grief education in schools. 3️⃣ Engaging with stakeholders to try and secure a future for bereavement support in all schools in NI. To learn more about the programme read our report on it’s findings and recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/e-84u3AA
