Our Markel Tax experts were recently invited by Contractor UK Limited to share our tax insights on the high-profile HMRC case involving former Manchester United and England captain, Bryan Robson. David Harmer, associate director at Markel Tax, provided his perspective on the case and highlighted that Bryan Robson didn’t “win” the majority of his IR35 case. Instead, most of the years assessed by HMRC were outside IR35’s scope, rendering the legislation inapplicable. For a detailed look at our assessment of the case, you can read the full article here: https://bit.ly/42LzscN #MarkelUK #taxexpertise, #IR35, #taxlaw #HMRC, #ContractorUK, #taxinsights #BryanRobsoncase

With #HMRC launching new guidance encouraging claimants of Research and Development (R&D) tax credit to come clean if their claims may have been incorrect or excessive, John Lewis, one of our senior tax investigations consultants, explores the initiative further with Taxation magazine. HMRC will potentially reduce penalties for revised claims, but there are still a range of issues and challenges that claimants need to understand in a sector that has been prone to unscrupulous advisers in the past. Read the article here and get up to speed with the latest R&D claims advice: https://bit.ly/4jtYOBW #MarkelUK #RandD #HMRC

We were recently invited to contribute to Taxation’s Readers’ Forum, sharing our expertise on two key topics: VAT registration for schools and business property relief (#BPR) inquiries. Our VAT Consultant, Gaynor Dunmall, highlighted upcoming changes: from next year, private school fees will see a 20% VAT. This applies to 2024 payments for 2025 terms, with VAT liability linked to the effective date of registration once the £90,000 threshold is crossed in a given timeframe. Andrew Marston, our Tax Advisory Manager, clarified BPR, explaining that it is unavailable for businesses primarily involved in securities, shares, land, or investments. However, relief is possible if over 50% of a company’s assets and profits derive from trading activities. For deeper insights into these two topical tax issues, check out the full responses below: https://bit.ly/4j42pqh #WeAreMarkel #VATOnSchools #BusinessPropertyRelief
