  • This week, the Institute of Physics (IOP) has launched a new report: Venture Capital in Physics Deep Tech: Unlocking Finance for Game-Changing UK Innovation and Growth. The UK has an amazing pipeline of physics deep tech businesses that are bringing technologies including quantum, semiconductors and cleantech to market. With the largest venture capital market and highest levels of start-up and spinout activity in Europe, the UK is a great place for these businesses to grow. However there is an opportunity to enhance them further by addressing a later stage funding gap to help maximise potential. The report sets out the potential that could be achieved in catalysing more high growth businesses taking physics technology to market and turbo boosting the UK economy. Thank you to Jenny Lovell, Roy Williamson, Jo Slota-Newson and all those involved in producing the report. Martlet Capital was pleased to be one of UK deep tech investors who contributed input. • Portfolio company, Echion Technologies, has raised a further £10 million to accelerate commercial growth. This funding will enable Echion to accelerate the speed at which its network of partnered cell manufacturers is able to produce commercially available cells which utilise Echion’s innovative niobium-based XNO® anode material. Echion’s XNO® niobium-based anode material enables lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries to safely fast charge in less than 10 minutes, maintain high energy densities even at extreme temperatures, and deliver high power across a cycle life of more than 10,000 cycles. Jean de La Verpilliere, CEO of Echion Technologies, said: “This investment by Barclays and BGF is strong recognition of the value delivered by XNO®. By utilising XNO®, cell manufacturers can deliver the most-innovative, sustainable, and high performing batteries to facilitate the effective electrification of heavy-duty vehicles. It is gratifying to have some of the world’s leading investors support our ambitions and cement their belief in XNO® by investing significant capital. • We were incredibly sad to learn of Peter Cowley’s passing. As our friend, mentor, colleague, cofounder and inspiration, he leaves behind a huge void and we will miss him greatly. His impact on us all will not be forgotten and his legacy will live on. He was a titan of the Cambridge technology ecosystem and the wider global angel investment community, receiving recognition across the world.  Peter was the ‘Invested Investor’. A passionate entrepreneur himself who was passionate about advising, mentoring, supporting and investing in other entrepreneurs. But above all, he was passionate about helping people. Peter gave a part of himself to so many. He touched countless lives in ways big and small, always willing to share his perspective and experience for the benefit of others. He was relentless, searingly honest and open, highly courageous, had a brain the size of a planet, matched in size by his kind and caring heart. As Cofounder of Martlet, Peter was instrumental in our existence, building out our presence, people and portfolio. For that and all his other contributions to life, we say thank you. It was truly a privilege to have known him. Our condolences to the family; Lies, Matt, Catherine and Miri, and all his friends, colleagues and those impacted by him.

AllFocal Optics (formerly Lark Optics), the Cambridge based deeptech startup pioneering nanophotonic lens technology for always-in-focus images, has announced $5.3million in funding. The new investment puts the Company on track to be the first in the world to deliver ultra-thin lenses that recreates human vision for a better and more comfortable viewing experience across applications in augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality. AllFocal’s lenses’ seamless integration of virtual and real worlds can be applied to gaming, healthcare, military strategy, and automotive and aerospace navigation. First automotive trials are to happen in early 2025 with Jaguar LandRover and AllFocal Optics expects to be in XR headsets, smart glasses and heads-up displays within two years. Dr Pawan Shrestha Shretha, AllFocal’s founder and CEO, comments “Critical to XR’s mass adoption is enabling users to interact with virtual images for as long as they like, without feeling nauseous, and to seamlessly shift focus between physical and virtual environments. Our technology makes that possible. By projecting a digital image onto a user’s retina, it keeps the image in focus regardless of how the eyes adjust to the surrounding world, completely eliminating any discomfort.” Alongside the funding, Dr Ash Salusbury, Microsoft’s Former VP of Technology and the leader of Meta’s AR programme, joins as AllFocal Optics’ chair. The round was led by Speedinvest and featured Martlet Capital, 7percent Ventures, Creator Fund, Cambridge Enterprise Ventures, another.vc and Mario Götze amongst others). Congratulations to Pawan, Xin Chang, Rick (Jingchun) Hao and the whole team! Link in the comments. #Deeptech #Cambridge #AR #VR #XR
