Last week, a group of our fantastic glass experts joined the International Festival of Glass. The festival boasts a creative programme of activities that combines the whole spectrum of glassmaking with other artforms to push boundaries and develop new opportunities, ideas and collaborations for makers, artists and performers. Clare Thorpe gave a presentation titled: 'Ancient Glass as a Window to the Future. Can We Lock Up Radioactive Waste for a Million Years?' Committee Appointments! Congratulations to PhD researchers Charlotte Nevin, Ava Sjoberg and Kyle O'Donoghue on their recent committee appointments. We are a strong advocate for extra-curricular activity in SMASH. This enables our researchers to develop transferrable skills to complement the technical skills which they develop throughout their PhD journey. Charley has been successfully appointed at the Engineering PGR co-President, alongside CBE colleague, Anna Leathard. This period sees an exciting time of change for the University where it will be moving away from departments to a new school structure. Charley and Anna will be working hard to represent students through this transition! Ava has been successfully reappointed as the President of GRAND in the new school of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering. She has also been reappointed to the Board of Trustees at Sheffield Students' Union for another two year term. Additionally, she been reappointed for a third year to The University of Sheffield Senate Academic Assurance Committee as the PGR representative. Kyle has been appointed to the role of Treasurer for the Engineering PGR Committee. Kyle will support Charley and the rest of the committee to ensure that social and networking events for PGRs in the faculty of engineering run smoothly. After three years, I have officially graduated! I recieved a Bachelors of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering with a 2:1 honours. I was also awarded the Frank Holland Memorial Prize for my third year performance across my examinations, lab work and dissertation exploring “The effect of Sr-doping and processing in Nitrogen on the crystal structure of NaNbO3”. I would to say thank you my supervisor Professor Derek Sinclair for his support and expertise throughout my final year project. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering for the constant support throughout the years. Finally my peers, family and friends for making these last three years such a great experience.
