Ever wondered how cotton goes from field to fabric? 🌾🧶 Two weeks ago, we started procurement in Jalna, one of our clusters in Central Maharashtra. What many people don’t know is that these fluffy cotton fibres go through a looooong process to make sure that we obtain high-quality bales! ⚙️ Here’s a closer look at our steps for procurement: Once the cotton has been collected and stored, it is transported to our ginning partners. Depending on the farmer’s resources, either Materra or the farmer will arrange transport. At the ginnery, the cotton is unloaded from the trucks in heaps. Digital payments are organised and sent to our farmers. Before any of the fibres are processed, the machines are thoroughly cleaned to prevent contamination with conventional cotton. Then, the fibres are placed inside the machines to separate seeds and waste, creating lint which is then pressed into bales. Finally, the bales are weighed individually and their details recorded, ensuring that they are fully traceable from farm to bale. They are loaded onto trucks and sent off to our customers or yarn-spinning partners. Every stage counts, and we are very proud of our team for making sure everything runs smoothly! 💚 #regenerativefarming #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativecotton #cottonfarming #cottonfarm #fashionisfarming

HAPPY WORLD SOIL DAY! 🌍🪱 World Soil Day was first proposed in 2002 by the International Union of Soil Sciences to highlight the importance of soil biodiversity and the need to promote sustainable management practices. According to FAO, nearly 33% of the world’s soils are moderately to highly degraded, as both intensive agriculture and demand for food increase–an alarming fact, considering 95% of our food comes from the soil ‼️ “Soil is more than dirt–it’s a living system,” explains Materra soil scientist Dr. Shivani Karwade. “Protecting soil health is key to tackling climate challenges for the future”. This is why it is CRITICAL for us to adopt practices that revitalise the soil instead of depleting it of its nutrients–including regenerative techniques like intercropping or cover cropping. Today, experts are holding a panel discussion in Bangkok in honour of WSD, evaluating global challenges to soil and potential solutions. But for us at Materra, we believe that *every day* should be dedicated to nurturing the soil 💪 P.S: Have you downloaded our guide to soil carbon sequestration? Thanks for the shoutout, Megan Doyle! ✨
This month marks four years since I started my Substack newsletter, The Titian Thread! 🥳 My mission has always been to create a resource that makes sustainability accessible to all, which is why I don’t paywall it, but it does take a lot time and effort. If you’ve found it useful over the years, I’d be so grateful if you share it with anyone who might also benefit from my monthly sustainable fashion curation! In this month's edition, I'm resharing a story I wrote back in 2022 about consumer psychology that brands harness drives overconsumption in the wake of the new Buy Now documentary on Netflix. You can also find two circularity reports from Circle Economy and Global Fashion Agenda, a new growth report from Rachel Arthur and Textile Exchange, plus a report on regenerative agriculture from Materra and Cotton Diaries! https://lnkd.in/g3Af9vWQ

👋 from the fields! 🌱🐝 The cotton harvest period is well underway, with our farmers busy collecting high-quality, #regenerative cotton fibres. Cotton picking, however, isn’t as easy as simply plopping them in a bag. Farmers and field labourers follow a bunch of rules, so that the cotton collected is well-intact and neither contaminated nor stained. For example, did you know cotton is picked up from the ground to avoid debris falling into bags? We also encourage our farmers to begin picking once 60-70% of the cotton bolls have burst, since immature plants have weaker, low-quality fibres. From picking later in the day to wearing cotton clothes on the field, it’s the combination of all these little steps which helps us achieve a premium harvest 💪 #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #cottonfarming #fashionisfarming
