𝟭𝟴 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟴 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 at MBN Solutions - 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 Since founding MBN 18 years ago (this month in 2007) I’ve had the privilege of helping organisations build and scale world-class data teams. Along the way, I’ve learned a few things about what it takes to succeed in this space. Here are 18 lessons from nearly two decades of working with data talent and leadership: 1. Talent drives innovation - The right people deliver the right impact. 2. Data skills aren’t optional - They’re transformational for businesses. 3. Culture eats strategy - Leadership shapes outcomes more than plans. 4. Retention beats recruitment - Investing in your team creates long-term value. 5. Agility wins markets - Those who adapt thrive, while others stagnate. 6. Diversity fuels creativity - Different perspectives lead to better solutions. 7. Leadership creates followership - Vision and clarity inspire trust and action. 8. AI needs talent - Tools are nothing without experts to wield them. 9. Data informs decisions - Gut instinct won’t scale in a competitive market. 10. Learning never stops - Skills evolve, and so must your teams. 11. Hiring is strategy - Every hire is a step toward achieving your goals. 12. Resilience is built, not assumed - Talent is the foundation of stability. 13. Relationships build teams - Transactional hiring leads to mediocre results. 14. Employer brands matter - People choose organisations that align with their values. 15. Collaboration beats silos - Ecosystems outperform individual efforts. 16. Invest in junior talent - Today’s graduates are tomorrow’s leaders. 17. Transparency builds trust - Clear expectations make for stronger relationships. 18. Timing is everything - Hire strategically and ahead of the market curve. Reflecting on these lessons reminds me why I’m so passionate about what I do. The final meeting of the Data Impact Leadership Forum for 2024, brought to you by MBN Solutions, examined the topic of 'Evolving Skills in a Data-Driven World'.
