However, all signs are good and a very positive future lies ahead. My advice if you are embarking on running your own business, is that it is not easy and sometimes you feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. However, the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Go and chase your dreams, and in this week of #mentalhealthweek, remember to talk to other people, get out into nature, be kind, and if things get to much to deal with there is always a way! Setting up McGeever Ltd I want to share with you my journey so far, in leaving a senior position as Engineering/ Health and Safety Director for Kannegiesser UK to setting up McGeever Ltd in May 2019. As my senior role had been predominantly for products and systems that were being exported globally, my UK network was very limited. This meant that when setting up my consultancy, I was starting from scratch, barring a few good connections that I had managed to keep. This led me to think about networking and how to get in touch with peers in the world of health and safety. I started searching for northwest health and safety groups and was fortunate to come across Lancashire Occupational Health and Safety Group. This group was coming up to 90 years old and the cost of £40 per year for a new startup company was fantastic. Also the group is not just aimed at health and safety professionals, it has business members as well covering all sectors. The group were so welcoming and I immediately felt really supported, and I’m glad to say I now have many connections who have become business friends who I can call on when I have a question or dilemma that is beyond my scope of knowledge or specialism. Fast forward nearly 5 years, I now have a very strong network of peers in health and safety, over 100 to be clear, plus a wider network of businesses in the uk both as clients and associates. How do clients use McGeever Ltd? 👇 I had a call from a client who needed a CDM Manager to cover a site. He was desperate to cover the role, with a suitable stand in but was limited on time. He called me and said Martin, I have been let down with an existing site manager, who has gone to another site at short notice and left the project and me in jeopardy. he told me, I have 1 month until we hand over to the client, a major high street chain, and the project has to be completed. I immediately juggled my commitments around and cleared a gap to allow me to be able to help out with his project. I agreed that I would commit to run the site until the handover day. I stayed in accommodation close to the site, so I could open and close the site every day for the month. I spent every day on site, conducted all relevant CDM site health and safety requirements and completed my time managing the site as required. The client, handed over in time, within scope and delivered the site over to the end user. My clients credibility was maintained and he was commissioned for CDM site management services of more similar projects from his client.
