This morning we had a visit from Steven McBlain from North Ayrshire Council's Equal Supported Employment North Ayrshire team, who popped in to pick up the goodies we're donating to the Selection Box Appeal 2024. It was great to hear of the huge number of selection boxes the team has gathered in this year (and now have to wrap up!), and quite moving to get a little insight into just how many children will get a gift as a result. A huge well-done to Steven and the team for running this appeal again this year, and helping make Christmas a little more enjoyable for so many.

We are delighted to share the news that McLaughlin Construction has been appointed by North Ayrshire Council to deliver the Coastal Hub, Phase 1 of the £14M Great Harbour project, in Irvine. Works will include the development of a themed regional playpark, skatepark, repairs to the Pilot House building and a new landscaped park setting. Speaking on the project, Director paul mclaughlin said "As a local SME that has operated from a base in North Ayrshire for almost 80 years, comprised of people throughout our business who live and have grown up in the communities that will be directly impacted, we're thrilled to be involved in this transformational project, and excited by the opportunity to increase local employment and engage our well-established, local supply chain" More about the project can be found on the NAC website: https://lnkd.in/e6vDcQrR

We were delighted to host a delegation including our Provost and local elected members, along with members of the council teams working with us to deliver the new amenity housing at our site at the former King's Arms in Irvine, yesterday. A glorious day, it was great to show the progress on-site and see the structure of the new building, integrated with and supporting the retained, historic façade, on this important landmark building in the town centre.
A historic building in Irvine town centre is being given a new lease of life. Work is well under way to give a new start to the former King’s Arms Hotel in the town’s High Street. Once building work is complete, it will provide six much-needed new homes for council tenants. Provost Anthea Dickson has visited the site with Irvine West Councillors Shaun Macaulay, Scott Gallacher and Chloe Robertson to view progress on the work, which started earlier this summer with McLaughlin Construction. Councillor Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Communities and Islands, said: " It’s fantastic to see the progress already made at the former King’s Arms. "The façade of the building is being retained as it remains a landmark in its own right although the rest of the building is being completely redeveloped from the ground up." Today we were visited by Jim from North Ayrshire Council who came along on behalf of Beith Community Development Trust, to collect a donation of some block paviors. We answered a call for help placed in the NAC Community Benefits Newsletter, and have donated enough blocks for the organisation to complete a paved area of four square meters. Thanks to Jim for picking them up and delivering them! #communitybenefits #reducereuserecycle

Former King's Arms - Irvine The last week has seen some major visual transformation on-site at the former King's Arms Hotel in Irvine town centre, as the steelwork has started going up. The project, being delivered by McLaughlin Construction for North Ayrshire Council sees the comprehensive redevelopment of the former hotel and pub to form social housing flats, delivering six much needed new amenity flats in the heart of the town. The building, which has been vacant for several years and was in a deteriorating state of significant disrepair, comprises a three-storey 19th Century block on an important corner site within Irvine Town Centre. The building is Category `C` listed and sits within the Town Centre Conservation Area. Having concluded demolitions and installed new foundations, erection of the new steel frame is now well underway. Possibly the quickest of structural systems to erect, when the steel arrives on site the 'skeleton' of the project rapidly starts to appear, giving the first real representation of the form and scale of the finished building and often the only, momentary glimpse of its structural form. On completion of the frame, our team will undertake construction of new stairs and landings, with erection of a scaffold around the perimeter imminent, to enable installation of new roof trusses, in turn setting the project on its trajectory towards being wind and water-tight once again.

Today we welcomed Arianne to our team as our new Carbon Accounts Administrator. She is with us on a 24 week placement, funded by North Ayrshire Council through their Parental Employment Programme (PEP). NAC's Parental employment team provide tailored support for parents with young children, to help them take their next move into employment. Having come to us through our involvement on the Net Zero Accelerator programme (also supported by NAC) Arianne will be working on our second year of carbon accounting and executing our Carbon Reduction Plan. She'll also be rejuvenating her work qualifications and undertaking an SVQ over the course of her time with us. Joining us from a sixteen-year stint as hard-working, stay-home parent she said "I'm looking forward getting back into working life and learning new things, but I'm really looking forward to not hearing "mum" being shouted every five minutes! On a more serious note, having worked in admin roles in the past, I was attracted by the opportunity to learn about carbon accounting, to gain real-life, relevant skills and, hopefully do my bit to help make a difference" Welcome to the team Arianne, we're sure you're going to fit in perfectly.

We were lucky enough to attend the official opening of the Hub On the Prom (which includes the Beach House Café), in Ardrossan today, and got to take in the spectacular, moody views across the bay with a delicious, warm coffee in hand. The project, delivered for Ardrossan Community Development Trust by McLaughlin Construction in conjunction with MAST Architects, TCS Construction Consultants and Clancy Consulting, saw the demolition of an existing toilet block which has now been replaced with a new building housing a café, kiosk for beach hire provision and public toilets (including a Changing Places toilet). The new building incorporates a number of environmentally friendly technologies including air source heat pumps and photovoltaic (PV) panels, that go towards offsetting running costs for the Trust. The Hub is augmented by a series of colourful ‘beach huts’ which can be rented out for a variety of uses; today we were treated to mini exhibition by a local photography club. Commenting recently on their social media, in a statement echoed in both his and Bill Anderson 's speeches today, Trust Chair Scott Mould wrote "Amazing project. Can't thank all partners of Ardrossan Community Development Trust enough for support and encouragement. This is the biggest Community owned project delivered for Ardrossan in a generation." We're delighted to have delivered this transformational project for such a worthy organisation within our community, and look forward to following their success and seeing the next phases of regeneration of the promenade unfold. The Trust are celebrating the official completion of the Hub On The Prom tomorrow (Saturday 12th October) 1pm - 5pm on South Beach Promenade. There will be activities and fun for all including FREE fairground rides and some food and drinks from the new café. Find Out More Event Details on their website - https://lnkd.in/gDcRphHW

Yesterday we attended the final session of the first year on Net Zero Nation’s Net Zero Accelerator where we, alongside a number of other progressive local business, received our completion certificates. Social enterprise, Net Zero Nation delivered the course with the support of Ailsa Reliability Solutions Ltd. and North Ayrshire Council, with Booth Welsh providing collaboration workspace to host the cohorts of SMEs working on the Accelerator programme. Importantly, out of this programme and with the expert help of Net Zero International, we’ve gained the skills required to produce and implement a credible (i.e. completed in accordance with SECR, PPN 06/21) Carbon Reduction Plan. The session included an insightful moment of reflection from each of the businesses that have been on the journey over the past 12 months, which demonstrated not only the passion and commitment of those involved, but also the real sense of collaboration and support in the room. More to come on this topic in the near future.
