I so often hear “Transformation” used interchangeably with “Tech”. This is so misguided and invariably leads to failure… On three occasions last week I talked about “transformation” as a process and outcome that involves three skillsets/areas of focus: 1️⃣ People. Remember them? It's so incredibly important that existing workforces are front-and-centre of transformation programmes. This means identifying and building capabilities. This means behavioural change. This means compelling value propositions (post and during transformation) and investment in culture. I have seen so many programmes stutter because of lack of people-focus. The biggest successes have literally always had huge people buy-in 👏 2️⃣ Strategy. A bit of a nebulous term, but by this I mean an organisation's mission/vision/goals, commercial drivers and ambitions, target operating model, P&L and financial metrics. I'm least wedded to the title "Strategy" here - it might be "Commercial" but that feels just as nebulous and, anyway, would be irritatingly small to fit in my pretty circles (🙃) - thoughts welcome! 3️⃣ Technology The new systems and processes and interfaces that underpin the "better" the transformation strives for. "Better" usually means one or more of: faster, cheaper, more data driven, scalable, easier to use etc etc. The most common barriers I have come up against here are: (i) art of the possible - senior stakeholders really not understanding what can be done/achieved, and limiting themselves accordingly; (ii) shiny new toy syndrome - yes, yes, it might "be AI" but you'd better off being open-minded to the solution that might emerge; and (iii) lack of an architect - it's astonishing how many LARGE organisations tech stacks have never really been properly architected, either having been "architected" by a hobbyist who thought they knew, or cobbled together very reactively. This usually leads to a HUGE number of a products, siloed datasets, headcount bloat to enable manual workarounds, and a generally crumby user experience... Successful transformation navigates and succeeds in ALL of these three. Neglecting one or more always undermines the whole 👎 Have I missed anything? MDRx
