Melanoma Focus

Non-profit Organization Management

The UK’s leading #melanoma charity funding research, services & information for patients, carers & professionals.

About us

Melanoma is the 5th most common cancer in the UK with 1 in 36 UK males and 1 in 47 UK females diagnosed in their lifetime. Yet we know that about 9 in 10 melanoma cases could be avoided. As experts in melanoma, Melanoma Focus serves the entire melanoma community, including medical professionals, patients, carers and the general public. We strive to shape a better future for melanoma patients. Melanoma Focus provides trusted support and information while commissioning and funding innovative research. Under this banner, our activities are grouped in 3 main areas: ▪️Patient support and information (for melanoma skin cancers and rare forms of melanoma) ▪️Professional education, resources and research ▪️Public awareness of melanoma and advocacy The charity organises the UK’s only multidisciplinary biannual, CME-accredited melanoma meetings for our healthcare professional colleagues and we host the annual Melanoma Patient Conference. We have produced and maintain the Melanoma TrialFinder, a resource to support the understanding of melanoma clinical trials across the UK. We are wholly committed to raising public awareness about melanoma as it is a cancer that can be predominantly prevented. Until then, diagnosing melanoma early provides the best opportunity for diagnosis, treatment and the potential for cure.

  • “I used sunbeds on and off over the years. I wrongly believed that being Mediterranean (Italian) I would be protected from skin cancer.” During July 2023 Crissie was diagnosed with stage 1 melanoma skin cancer, fortunately Crissie’s melanoma was caught early, however she had a rare complication in which her melanoma tumour was attached to a blood vessel on removal (lymphovascular invasion) which means she is still under watch. Crissie wants to use her experience to generate awareness, thank you Crissie for sharing your personal story. Our data released last year, found that over a quarter (28%) of adults in the UK say they use sunbeds, rising to 43% of 18-25 year olds. There is NO safe way to tan (other than the use of fake tan from a bottle). 86% of cases are preventable by staying safe in the sun and avoiding sun. Learn more👉 https://buff.ly/3bbr9yL

  • As 2024 draws to a close, we are pleased to share a message from our Chief Executive, Susanna Daniels, reflecting on this year’s achievements and offering a glimpse into our exciting plans for 2025: “2024 has been another remarkable year for Melanoma Focus. Together, we have made significant strides in raising awareness, campaigning, fundraising, supporting people living with melanoma, their loved ones and melanoma healthcare professionals. It has been a privilege to connect with members of our community this year and witness firsthand the profound impact of our work. Our dedicated team have worked extremely hard to ensure that more people living with melanoma have access to accurate, up to date information and support. We have continued to update and expand all of our accredited information and resources. Our Melanoma Helpline service has grown from strength to strength and more people are accessing the support they need. This year’s Melanoma Patient Conference was particularly impactful, delivering hope, empowerment, and vital education to attendees. Our national awareness campaigning and advocacy work reached more people than ever before. We have continued to serve the melanoma healthcare professional community, providing CME accredited educational conferences, whilst we update the mucosal melanoma guidelines as well as supporting the production of immunotherapy skin side-effect guidelines and information. We have provided critical input to NICE and SMC applications supporting the access of new treatments to melanoma patients across the UK. Looking ahead, 2025 will mark the launch of our new three-year strategy, speaking to our vision to shape a better future for melanoma patients. With the continued support, passion and dedication of our incredible trustees, supporters, fundraisers, and staff, we will drive change, inspire hope, and make a lasting difference to those affected by melanoma. We will also continue to raise vital awareness of this potentially highly preventable cancer.”
