ON A DAY LIKE TODAY: 17 FEBRUARY How a Mouldy Cantaloupe Changed Medicine Forever 🗓 On this day in 1941, the first clinical use of penicillin was administered to a patient. But did you know that the key to mass-producing this life-saving antibiotic came from an unsuspecting hero? 🔬 In 1943, researchers at a U.S. lab were struggling to find a strain of mould that could produce penicillin efficiently. Their breakthrough? A mouldy cantaloupe purchased from a local market in Peoria, Illinois. 🍈 📢 This unremarkable fruit contained a strain of Penicillium chrysogenum that produced 200 times more penicillin than previous strains, paving the way for large-scale production during World War II. 💡 Just like that humble cantaloupe, the best things often go unnoticed—until they change the game. At Melon&Co, we know that great things come from the simplest ingredients, and we demonstrate the same commitment that changed the world all those years ago. 📍 Because you never know… the next big discovery might just start with a melon. 🍈 Source: https://lnkd.in/e8qi5tsm #Brazilianmelons #Cantaloupe #History lesson by Melon&Co, an Agrícola Famosa SA company.

ON A DAY LIKE TODAY: 11 FEBRUARY François Auguste Ferdinand Mariette (1821–1881) was born. He was a French scholar, archaeologist and Egyptologist, and the founder of the Egyptian Department of Antiquities. DID YOU KNOW? Melons, particularly watermelons (Citrullus lanatus), held a notable place in ancient Egyptian agriculture and culture. Cultivated as early as 2000 BC, watermelons were valued not only for their sweet taste but also for their high water content, making them a vital hydration source in Egypt's arid climate. Depictions of watermelons have been found in ancient Egyptian art, including painted limestone reliefs, indicating their significance in daily life and possibly in ritual contexts. Additionally, seeds and leaves of watermelons have been discovered in Egyptian tombs, suggesting that the fruit was esteemed enough to accompany the deceased into the afterlife. The cultivation of watermelons in ancient Egypt not only provided sustenance but also contributed to the agricultural practices that supported the civilization's growth along the Nile River.
