In a landmark ruling for brand owners, Thatchers has won its trademark appeal against Aldi. The Court of Appeal found Aldi's lemon cider intentionally mimicked Thatchers' design to trade on its goodwill, overturning a previous High Court ruling. In their article, Euan Duncan, Head of MFMac's Manufacturing, Media and Technology team, and Calum Chrystal, Trainee Solicitor, explore how this victory signals a major shift in the fight against lookalike products and why brand owners should act now to protect their trade dress and appearance of their brands. The appointment of a high-profile board to GB Energy, including a former CEO of Scottish Power Energy Networks, marks the first news in months concerning the Labour government's flagship publicly owned energy company. With a fund of £8.3bn to invest in, develop and build new energy projects in the UK it should become a major force in the push for Net Zero, but very little has been heard about it in some time. Observers will be hoping that the new appointments are a sign that more news will be coming soon. We are looking forward to another great day at the SR Offshore Wind Conference in Glasgow, which began with a fascinating opening address by Chris Stark CBE. A fantastic opportunity to hear from industry leaders, government officials, and key stakeholders as we discuss the scale and pace needed to deliver Scotland’s pipeline of over 40GW of offshore wind. #SROFFSHORE25

The spotlight at this year's World Future Energy Summit, held in Abu Dhabi last week, was on artificial intelligence's transformative role in energy. AI's potential in enhancing grid connectivity was a major talking point, which was no surprise - as the grid becomes more complex, so will the task of meeting energy needs for economic growth. This will be a space well worth watching - while it is crucial to explore how AI can be integrated into our systems, we should approach this with caution. For further information on MFMac's work in the Energy & Renewables sector, please head to our website or contact David McGuire or Bonar Mercer. #ADSW2025 #RenewableEnergy #AI
